Weir, Madonna to search for new football coaches; Collopy back at Edison

Two local teams are going to be looking for a new football coach, while another will have a familiar face back on the sidelines.

Almost exactly one month after Madonna announced it was bringing back football after a one-year hiatus with the hire of Quinton Smith, Smith announced in a statement on social media Wednesday night that he had resigned as the Blue Dons coach.

Smith, a Weir High grad and former strength and conditioning coach for the Red Riders from 2015-23, said in the statement that he was stepping down now “to give (Madonna) as much time (as) needed to find a quality replacement.”

His statement also added, “I greatly appreciate the opportunity to lead the program but I do need to do what’s best for me.”

Madonna is attempting to bring back the football program after not being able to field a team last season due to low numbers. The Blue Dons last competed in 2024, going 7-3 under John McCune.

Then, on Thursday, news broke that Weir High head coach Quincy Wilson is also resigning after just one season.

That resignation will not become official until Monday’s Hancock County Board of Education meeting.

Wilson is the 2005 Kennedy Award winner and state champion with the Red Riders and went on to play at WVU and in the NFL before getting into coaching.

The Red Riders went 0-10 last season and will be looking for a third coach in as many years.

Finally, Edison will have a different coach, but not a new one, as Mike Collopy is returning as the head football coach.

Collopy, the longtime baseball coach for the Wildcats who guided the football team to the playoffs in all four of his season as the head coach from 2021-24, resumes the role after one year as an assistant on the staff of Anthony Pierro.

The Wildcats went 6-4 last season and made the playoffs.

They were 32-13 in Collopy’s last stint at the helm.
