Stuff to know as WVU’s roster takes shape
MORGANTOWN — West Virginia’s football season might seem far from now. It’s over 200 days away. But it’s a lot closer than you might think. The transfer portal has come and gone, and WVU’s 2026 roster and coaching staff are taking shape. Players are already on campus, sitting in on meetings and pumping iron.
The Mountaineers have started to update their online roster, which includes players’ numbers, weight, and height, and reveals some players who’ll be joining in the summer.
It’s not a complete list, but it gives a little glimpse of what to expect when WVU takes the field on Sept. 5 against Coastal Carolina.
Here is what stands out from the online roster.
Numbers to know
There are a lot of big-time players coming in for the 2026 season. Rich Rodriguez made some splashes in the portal and on the recruiting trail.
One of the biggest parts of NIL, and what NIL was supposed to be, was paying players for selling their jerseys. There’s a lot more to it now, but players still make some money from jersey sales.
There’s a lot of roster turnover from the 2025 season, so fans will be out shopping for new jerseys with new players. Numbers can change before the start of the season, but here are some new numbers to know.
WVU’s biggest get this offseason was the FBS’s leading rusher Cam Cook from Jacksonville State. Cook was the 24th-best player in the portal and was recently listed as the 44th-best player in ESPN’s Top 100 players from last season. With how much Rodriguez runs the ball, Cook is going to be the offense in 2026.
Cook is listed to be wearing No. 4 for the 2026 season, which he wore for the Gamecocks last season. Last year, WVU’s leading receiver Cam Vaughn wore No. 4. He transferred to Miami in the offseason.
New transfer quarterback Michael Hawkins is wearing No. 3 as of now. Hawkins transferred from Oklahoma in the offseason. After playing two seasons with the Sooners, Hawkins is expected to be in a quarterback battle with returning quarterback Scotty Fox Jr.
WVU’s newly acquired pair of brothers, running back Amari Latimer and cornerback Geimere Latimer, will both wear No. 1. Teams can have duplicate numbers as long as they’re not on the field at the same time. Former WVU running back Jahiem White wore No. 1 last season, and now Amari, who was a 4-star out of high school, will take the number.
Capping off the transfers, former 4-star LSU receiver Taron Francis is listed to be wearing No. 11. Francis wore No. 83 for the Tigers.
Some of the top new freshmen received their numbers for the time being. 4-star Kevin Brown will wear No. 74, and 4-star Matt Sieg, who is expected to play both ways, will wear No. 3. He’ll have to change his number if he wants to be on the field at the same time with Hawkins. Quarterback Jyron Hughley took long-time Mountaineer QB Nicco Marchiol’s No. 8.
Interesting metrics
The heights and weights are listed for the players on the current roster.
WVU has some beef on the offensive line. The Mountaineers have 20 offensive linemen, and have 11 of them over 300 pounds. True freshman Camden Goforth is the second heaviest player at 321 pounds, which is four pounds behind returner Josh Aisosa. 4-star linemen Kevin Brown is listed at 280 pounds. He’s still young and will definitely put on weight before the 2026 season in the fall.
The offensive line makes up a lot of the height for the team, too. Four offensive linemen are among the 10 tallest players on the team.
The Mountaineers tallest player is Mississippi State transfer tight end Cameron Ball, who is listed at a whopping 6-foot-7. Just behind him is redshirt freshman and West Virginia native Carter Zuliani, at 6-foot-6. WVU’s tallest wide receiver is USC transfer Prince Strachan, who is 6-foot-5.
Players not listed
The online roster is far from the final draft. There are a couple of players missing, and WVU could still add one or two out of the transfer portal.
There are some true freshmen who aren’t listed. Most of them signed letters of intent and will be on campus in the summer after they finish their senior year. Running back SirPaul Cheeks and quarterback Wyatt Brown are both not listed on the roster, but have signed letters of intent.
Two players signed letters of intent that were released. Defensive linemen Kamdon “KJ” Gillespie requested his release a couple of weeks ago. Australian punter Chase Ridley did the same and recently committed to Arizona.
WVU has one commit for the February signing period. West Virginia star high school player Bradley Mossor recently committed to the Mountaineers after receiving an offer.
