NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen boys basketball team had about as good of a first half as a team could have Friday night against rival Weir High.
The Golden Bears opened a 12-4 lead after one quarter thanks to a 10-0 run, then out-scored the Red Riders 21-1 in the second quarter on the way to a 64-32 victory inside the Bears Den.
The huge second quarter pushed the lead to 33-5 at halftime and the Bears, now 8-3, were well on their way.
As much as it seemed everything went right for Oak Glen, it was the opposite for Weir High (4-8), who went over five minutes of game time without a point and did not make a basket the entire second quarter.
The Red Riders did score 27 in the second half, but the hole was already too deep. Weir shot just 23 percent overall.
For Oak Glen, it was a big win in the OVAC Class 4A standings as the Bears entered the week sitting in fifth place. The top four qualify for the conference tournament, with the cut off being Feb. 3.
Gavin Geisse led the way for Oak Glen with 15 points. He was one of 11 different players to score in the win.
Elijah Knisely tallied nine, while Chase Hartung netted seven and Mason Kell, Aiden Dawson and Will Weekley each netted six.
For the Red Riders, Kason Lash led the way with nine points and Teddy Glyptis netted seven.
The Golden Bears were slated to be back in action Saturday hosting Tyler Consolidated. Weir High was scheduled to travel to North Marion Saturday afternoon.
