East District, OVAC leading Big Red boys earned another big win on Saturday night

Steubenville Big Red traveled to North Canton and defeated the once beaten Ontario Warriors, 89-64, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Classic Saturday.

Big Red (10-1) got off to a slow start and trailed 19-12 at the end of the first quarter.

Cardae Brown of Ontario (13-2) scored 24 of his game-high 26 points in the opening half hitting four 3s.

Big Red exploded for 34 points in the second quarter, as Santino Haney netted 12 points and Tre’von Wiggins nine points. Sophomore Landon Bowers added seven points, as Big Red took the lead 46-36 at halftime.

Each team scored 22 points in the third period, with Ontario never getting closer than seven points.

Cole Bowers, who led Big Red with 24 points, tallied eleven of Big Red’s points in the third on the way to a 68-58 lead after three.

Big Red put the game out reach in the fourth, out- scoring the Warriors 21-6.

Haney ended the night with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists. Landon Bowers had 17 points and Tre’von Wiggins 16 points pacing Big Red, which shot 53 percent from the field.

Big Red, which is leading the Division III East District and OVAC Class 5A standings, hosts Martins Ferry tonight inside the Crimson Center.
