Barons top Bethany to improve to 11-3

STEUBENVILLE — The Franciscan University of Steubenville’s men’s basketball team continued its strong start to the season by adding a conference win to its tally.

The Barons topped visiting Bethany College inside the Finnegan Fieldhouse Wedneday night, 89-73.

The win improves FUS to 11-3 on the season and to 3-2 in the President’s Athletic Conference. Bethany drops to 5-9 and 1-3 in the PAC.

The Barons opened a 49-26 lead at halftime and, while the Bison had a better second half, it was enough for Joe Wallace’s team to add to the win total.

FUS had the advantage in second chance points, points off turnovers, bench points and points in the paint.

The Barons were led by 18 points and six rebounds from Zach Oliver, 15 points and seven rebounds from Karl Yonkeu, 14 points from NCAA Division III leading scorer Sawyer Butler, 13 from Zachary Pollaro and 11 from Anthony Covetta.

A local product, CCHS graduate and last season’s East District Player of the Year Benji Rook, contributed for FUS, netting four points and a rebound off the bench.

The Barons are back in action on Saturday at home hosting Westminster College in another PAC game.
