Weir pulls away to reach Region 1 semifinals

WEIRTON – The outcome was never in doubt.

The Weir girls soccer team netted its first goal 63 seconds into its match against Magnolia, and the second-seeded Red Riders scored their 10th less than three minutes into the second half to defeat the seventh-seeded Blue Eagles, 10-0, via mercy rule in an West Virginia Class AA-A Region 1 Quarterfinal Wednesday night up at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

“It was cold, windy and a little sprinkly,” Weir (9-7-3) head coach Jeremy Angelo said. “For the girls, yeah, it was a good night. We had opportunities, and we were able to finish. The girls work hard. We looked good at times. We moved people around. It was a good night. You don’t know what is going to happen in a sectional or now a regional game. You don’t know if you are going to come out nervous, or you are going to come out and play. We came out and played.”

Seven different players netted a goal for the Red and Black, while five contributed an assist.

Individually, KK Engle collected two goals and two assists, Madelyn Cramer recorded two goals and one assist and Brynn Artman tallied two goals. Also, Elliana Noel ended up with a goal and two assists, Bianca Pittman produced a goal and an assist and Kameryn Mallas and Rachel Lazear each delivered a goal.

The girls in black fired 22 shots on goal en route to the win. The girls in white did not take a shot on goal.

With the win, Weir will play No. 3 seed Oak Glen in a regional semifinal at 3 p.m. Saturday at home.

“It’s going to be cold Saturday,” Angelo said. “I assume we are going to be playing Oak Glen unless Tyler Consolidated is able to pull the upset.”

The Golden Bears (9-7-5) shut out the sixth-seeded Silver Knights, 9-0, in their semifinal Wednesday night up at the Bears Den.

The two Hancock County rivals have met twice this season with the first match ending in a tie before the Red Riders defeated the Golden Bears in the OVAC Class 4A Tournament. The two rivals battled to a 1-1 tie Sept. 4 up at Oak Glen before Weir came away with a 1-0 victory Sept. 22 at home.

The Blue Eagles end the season with a record of 4-16-1.

“They did not give up,” Angelo said. “They worked. They tried to score. They made some saves. They didn’t just stand around. They came to play.”

Weir led 9-0 at halftime before Lazear ended the match with her goal with 37:11 showing on the scoreboard clock.
