WINTERSVILLE — While no team starts the season hoping to be playing in the consolation matches during OVAC week, it is an opportunity for teams to get more games in late in the season.

Wheeling Park took advantage of that opportunity by adding a pair of victories to its total, fending off host Indian Creek and Brooke in a consolation pool tri Monday evening on Coach D Court.

The Patriots (7-13-1) had to battle for both wins, topping Creek (4-18) in the opening match of the evening 25-22 and 25-21.

In the matchup with Brooke (9-15), Park overcame deficits in both sets to win 25-23 and 25-19.

“I was super excited with the effort of our girls tonight,” Wheeling Park head coach Samantha Gentle said. “We’re happy to get to play these two games and get wins against two teams that were really fighting and making us battle for it.

“I thought my girls played really well, they came together and it was a good night of volleyball. We showed some toughness, we were behind in at least one set in both matches and our girls showed a lot of resiliency to win those sets and matches.”

Graclyn Davis had 21 assists and four aces on the night for Park, while Olivia Hengler had 20 assists, Rowan Gillespie tallied 10 digs and Grace Tamburin tallied 18 kills.

Brooke rebounded in the finale of the night, topping the Redskins 25-20 and 25-18 for a split of the evening.

“It was a good bounce back to come back and beat Creek,” Brooke head coach Dee Parr said. “We felt like we should have beat Park in the first one, we would get up and not be able to hang on. We had leads and didn’t finish, but to come out and battle back against Indian Creek was good to see.”

The victory over Creek was the Bruins second of the season after splitting two regular season meetings.

“We like playing them,” Parr said. “We made some changes in the second game, we had a couple young girls come in and play well. We’ve had some young girls come along this season and step into different roles, the future is bright.

“It was very nice to see them adjust and be able to finish in the second game.”

For Creek, it was an inability to sustain momentum that made it difficult in both matches, especially in the finale against Brooke.

“I thought against Park we did a better job of keeping momentum and came out with more energy,” Creek head coach Crystal Hammack said. “This was the first tri-match we’ve played all year, I don’t know if that played a role against Brooke, but we just had a hard time keeping any momentum.”

The bright spot on the night for the hosts was Cara Vandeborne registering her 500th career kill.

“I was really excited to see her get that milestone,” Hammack said. “She works really hard and we’re really proud of her.”

Vandeborne finished with a combined 15 kills on the night between the two matches to go with three blocks. Gabby Taylor had 10 assists and Meghan Paoloemilio had 11 assists and three aces. Emma Westfall tallied six kills.
