Wildcats pull away from Huskies for key win
CADIZ — The Edison football team battled to a key victory on the road Friday night.
The Wildcats pulled away from Harrison Central out at Wagner Field in Cadiz for a 35-19 victory, and in the process have unofficially clinched a playoff spot.
The victory moved Edison to 6-3 on the season, and, according to Joe Eitel’s unofficial rankings late Friday night, secured a playoff spot in Division V, Region 17. Eitel had the Wildcats sitting in sixth place in the region. The top four get a first round bye and the top eight will host at least one round.
The loss also eliminated the Huskies (3-6) from playoff contention in the same region.
The Wildcats led 13-6 after one quarter, but the Huskies surged ahead 19-13 going to the fourth quarter. Edison, though, out-scored the Huskies 22-0 in the final quarter to earn the key win.
Edison quarterback Nolan Haught went 12 of 19 for 201 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while also having an interception return for another score on defense.
Brett Hellyer had a big night running the ball, going for 224 yards and a pair of scores on 31 carries.
Skyler Willoughby hauled in five passes for 112 yards and a score, while Evan Kimmerle also caught a TD pass and Andrew Kirkman tallied 48 yards on three grabs.
Matt Evans had an interception on defense.
Both teams play in a rivalry game next week.
Harrison Central will travel to Buckeye Local to close its season in the annual battle for VALES Trophy.
Edison closes the regular season with a big match up hosting Indian Creek in the annual Route 43 Bowl next Friday. Both teams have a lot of seeding implications on the line.
Central gets huge win on the road
BOWERSTON — The Catholic Central football team picked up the most important win of its season Friday night.
The Crusaders, who entered the week on the playoff bubble, went on the road to Conotton Valley and came home with a 48-30 triumph over the Rockets.
The win moves Central to 5-4 on the season and, according to Joe Eitel’s unofficial rankings Friday night, moved CCHS into seventh place in the Division VII, Region 27 standings. The top eight host at least one round and the top 12 make the playoffs. Central jumped five spots from 12th with the win.
Conotton Valley falls to 6-3 on the season and is sixth in the region.
The Rockets led 12-8 after one quarter, but Central took a 21-18 lead by halftime, then out-scored CV 27-12 in the second half to pull away for the big victory.
The Crusaders return home next Saturday night to host Cleveland East Tech on senior night as they look to earn a fourth-straight trip to the playoffs.
Oak Glen fall in overtime
SISTERSVILLE — The Oak Glen football team dropped a tough 29-21 loss in overtime on the road at Tyler Consolidated on Friday night.
The defeat dropped the Golden Bears to 6-2 on the season. WVTailgateCentral’s unofficial rankings had the Golden Bears dropping to No. 13 in the Class AA standings on Friday night. The top 16 make the playoffs.
Oak Glen will look to bounce back next Friday night when they host rival East Liverpool in the annual battle of the bridge.
