Big Red girls pull away from East Liverpool on senior night

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red girls’ soccer team was on fire from the start against East Liverpool on Senior Night.

Big Red netted four goals in a little more than six minutes to start the match en route to shutting out the Potters, 11-0, via mercy rule on Tuesday night on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.

“It was a good night,” Big Red (10-2-1) head coach Annie Cutri said. “We are starting to prep for the playoffs. We are trying some new things. We are trying to add some versatility to our style of play. We were able to control the game. We moved the ball around.”

The Red and Black collected six goals in the second half meaning the entire second half was played with a running clock. The hosts tallied five more goals in the second half with the final one coming in the waning seconds of play.

“I told the girls before the game that I wanted us to start early and to stay consistent,” Cutri said. “We have been a second half team, or we get going late in the first half. We wanted to come out early and score, so we could settle down and take the pressure off of ourselves.”

Individually for Big Red, Bailee Beall tallied five goals and one assist, Gianna Thomas scored two goals while adding two assists and Kenzy Petrelle produced two goals and one assist. Also, Sagan Smarrella netted a goal and an assist, Lucy Saccoccia collected a goal and Brynn Bowers recorded three assists.

The girls in black used two goalies in the match. Sadie Edwards started in goal, and she did not have to make a save. She was replaced by Jodeci Green to start the second half. Likewise, Green did not have to make a save.

The visitors from Columbiana County also used two goalies in the match. Nariyah Monteiro started in net for the girls in the white jerseys, and she made six saves before being replaced in the second half. Her replacement made three saves.

Prior to the start of the match, Big Red honored their six seniors – Caleigha Birden, Isabella Fletcher, Ireland Marshall, o Edwards, Smarrella and Beall.

“They re a great group of seniors,” Cutri said. “They set the standard for Leadership, commitment and teamwork. Their dedication to the sport and to each other is inspiring. They’re the type of players who lead by example, pushing themselves and their teammates to be better every day. It’s hard to put into words the impact they’ve had on the Steubenville High School girls’ soccer program, but I am proud of everything they’ve accomplished. They’ll be remembered as the kind of players who made the team better just by being apart of it.”

The East Liverpool (4-7-2) seniors – Renee Wright, Jules Burkett, Cheyenne Taggart and Kierra Walls – at the match were honored prior to the Big Red seniors receiving their recognition.

Big Red is scheduled to play rival Weir at 6 p.m. Thursday at home.

East Liverpool is slated to play Brooke at 6 p.m. Thursday on the road.
