Big Red boys fall in close tourney battle with John Glenn
NEW CONCORD — The Big Red boys soccer team put up a valiant effort against top seed John Glenn on Tuesday night on the road in the opening round of the Division III East District tournament.
Unfortunately for Steubenville, though, the Muskies emerged with a narrow 2-1 victory.
Big Red closes its season with a mark of 10-6-1.
A successful class of five senors — Cole Bowers, Josiah Rea, Gabe Martin, Drew Stimpert and Joey Rice — will depart.
“The Seniors end their career with two district championships and a regional runner up,” Big Red head coach Greg Bowers said. “Cole gets a lot of the attention because of the goals but this group was way more than that. Josiah Rea is one of the premier defenders in the Ohio Valley. Gabe Martin and Drew Stimpert have contributed playing in multiple positions over the past couple of years. Joey Rice came back to have a solid senior year.
“Overall this group represents Steubenville High School to the highest standard on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
Steubenville, which was the No. 3 seed, struck first with a goal from Landon Bowers off an assist from Cole Bowers, but John Glenn scored the equalizer late in the first half then tallied the game winner midway through the second half.
