Weir High sweeps Central
WEIRTON — The Catholic Central volleyball team entered its match against Weir coming off its first win of the season, and the Crusaders looked to keep the momentum going against the Red Riders.
Unfortunately for the Crusaders, the day belonged to the Red Riders as Weir ended up sweeping Catholic Central, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19, Tuesday night on Ron “Fritz” Williams Court inside the Carl Hamill Fieldhouse.
“We had the opportunity to take a break and to practice and to work on things,” Weir (3-11-1) head coach Fran Capaldi said. “We are trying to build consistency. When we are up, we want to stay up and go on a run.”
For the Crusaders, the match came down to the little things.
“It was the little things,” first-year Catholic Central (1-15) head coach Kaylyn Cochran said. “They played well. They were competitive.”
Individually for Weir, Ella Kaufman finished with two aces, 13 kills, 20 assists and 18 digs, Illionna Kirlangitis collected six aces, nine kills, two assists and 18 digs and Amalia Kirlangitis tallied two aces, two kills, two assists and six digs. Also, Kaylee Webster recorded two aces, four assists and seven digs and Zoey Spencer produced four kills and four digs.
The win enabled the girls from Hancock County to sweep the season series. Weir defeated Catholic Central in four games Aug. 28 on the road inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.
“They were more consistent,” Capaldi said. “They went on runs. They were able to build confidence, and I think that helped them. They were more consistent with their hitting, and they blocked a lot more.”
Weir won the first two games at Catholic Central before the Crusaders came back to the win third to force a fourth game. Tuesday, the Red Riders once again won the first two games, but this time they were able to win the third to sweep the match.
“Weir did a good job of reading us,” Cochran said. “They did a good job with their coverages. We have to do a better job of capitalizing when teams are out of position. They are a strong team. Their record does not reflect how well they play.”
After letting the third game slip away in the first meeting, the Red Riders were not going to let that happen the second time around.
“That is something we still struggle with,” Capaldi said about her team dealing with the ups and downs of a game or a match. “We did not talk today the way I want us to. We won today, but we were very flat. I would like to see us have a little more communication. Communication is vital. It is a lot easier to win and to play when you have communication.”
Catholic Central defeated Bishop Rosecrans Saturday on the road, however, the Crusaders were unable to build off the momentum they got from defeating the Bishops.
“It was extremely important,” Cochran said about the win. “It helped to build their confidence. It shows them the work they are putting in is paying off. We have played a tough schedule this year.”
Weir is scheduled to play Wheeling Central Thursday at home.
The JV match is set to start at 5:30 p.m. The Maroon Knights swept the Red Riders Sept. 10 at home.
“We played a real close match against them down there,” Capaldi said. “We are looking forward to playing them again on Thursday. We are going to have to come out ready to play. It is a sectional games for us. We want to put ourselves in the best possible position come sectionals.”
Catholic Central is slated to play city rival Big Red Thursday on the road inside the Crimson Center.
The varsity match is set to start at 6:45 p.m. Big Red swept the Crusaders Sept. 4 on the road.
“It is a very big match,” Cochran said. “The girls have been working hard.”
