Weir High splits a tri with Harrison Central and John Marshall

WEIRTON — Weir battled back to earn a split in a Tuesday evening tri-match Tuesday on its home court against John Marshall and Harrison Central.
After falling to the Monarchs in straight sets, 25-16 and 25-15, the Red Riders regrouped and took care of Harrison Central 25-19, 25-14, to earn their second win of the campaign.
The Monarchs earlier best Harrison 27-25, 25-15 and improved to 6-2-2. Weir’s record stands at 2-5-1 while the Huskies fell to 2-6.
Weir actually jumped out to an early advantage in its match vs. JM.
The Monarchs opened a 5-2 lead on the strength of two strong kill shots from Nia Miller. But three attack errors, coupled with some timely hitting by the Red Riders’ Ella Kaufman saw the hosts reel off nine straight points to go ahead 11-5.
JM battled back with a pair of kills from Paislee Babiczuk and eventually knotted the score at 12-12.
Weir, which played error free up until that point, started to unravel a bit. Four attack errors during the remaining duration of the first set didn’t help as JM pulled away with a 25-16 first-set win.
The second set saw both teams struggle in spurts with both attack and service errors.
The Riders’ remaining within striking distance during the first half, cutting the deficit to three at 10-13 after Kaufman hit off a block attempt successfully.
But JM scored four of the next five points and slowly pulled away.
Sarah Naome led the Monarchs with six kills, followed by four from miller and three from Addison Blake.
The trio benefitted from some excellent setting by Sarah Hess, who assisted on 10 scoring shots. Blake added three aces.
Amalia Kirlangitis bolstered the Red Riders attack with a nine assist effort. Kaufman posted the most kills with five, followed by Illionna Kirlangitis with three.
Weir returns to action Saturday when they cross the river to face Big Red on Saturday. Harrison plays host to Indian Creek on Thursday while John Marshall will put its four match win streak on the line Thursday when it hosts Warren.
