Creek rallies back to top Huskies, end losing streak

WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek and Harrison Central volleyball teams entered their match with both teams looking to snap a losing streak.

The Redskins had lost their last six matches going into the match up against the Huskies, while the visitors from Harrison County had dropped five straight.

Harrison Central won the first set to take the lead in the match, however, Indian Creek responded by winning the next three to win the match, 18-25, 25-17, 25-12, 25-19, Monday night at home on Coach D Court.

“We have not have had our momentum,” Indian Creek (4-10) head coach Crystal Hammack said. “We have struggled the last few weeks to find our groove. Tonight, we settled down, we played our set and we worked together.”

The Huskies won the first gain to get the momentum on their side, however, the girls in blue were unable to keep it.

“I think we got a little too comfortable in the second set, and we were not able to bounce back,” Harrison Central (4-11) head coach Grace Godich said. “The girls played hard. We have made a lot of changes. We lost our libero – Mikayla Pelegreen. The girls played well.”

For the Redskins, Cara Vandeborne collected one assist, three aces, 11 kills and five blocks, Gabby Taylor tallied 12 assists and four aces and Emma Westfall finished with seven kills and five blocks. Also, Kylie Dray delivered two kills and one block, Meghan Paoloemilio produced nine assists and Gracie Klinesmith contributed five kills. Next, Trinity Greene chipped in with two kills, Nina Householder ended up with two aces and Abbey Pendleton added one ace. Finally, Delaney Bates-Dallman picked up one kill.

For Harrison Central, Madison Taylor tallied five aces and 25 digs, Leah Grady delivered five aces and eight assists and Jaylin Ward collected six kills and two blocks. Also, Abigail O’Rourke recorded 18 digs, and Hannah Grady added 10 assists.

The win enabled the girls from Jefferson County to earn a split in the season series against their Buckeye 8 rivals. A big difference in the two matches was Harrison Central having to change its lineup around.

“Both teams put up a good fight here and there,” Godich said.

Harrison Central defeated Indian Creek in five sets, Sept. 4 at home.

“We made a lot of errors out there,” Hammack said. “We had a lot of unforced errors with our hitting and with our passing. We cleaned that up tonight.”

Trailing 2-1 in the match, the Huskies were tied with the Redskins at 19 in the fourth set. Harrison Central was looking to extend the match to a fifth and deciding set, however, Indian Creek responded and scored the final six points of the set to win the set and the match.

“Very much so,” Hammack said about it being important for her team to get back on the winning side of things. “We have hit a bit of a rough road. It is not how you start the season, but how you end it. We’re going to keep plugging away.”

Both teams next match is against Edison.

The Redskins are scheduled to play the Wildcats tonight out at the Edison Fieldhouse.

The Huskies are slated to take on the Wildcats Wednesday at home. Harrison Central is taking on Edison in annual a Volley for the Cure match.
