Big Red girls take down Brooke
STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red girls’ soccer keeps on rolling.
Big Red scored a little more than two minutes into its match against Brooke, and Big Red went on to take down the Bruins, Saturday afternoon on Reno Saccoccia Field inside Harding Stadium.
“We scored on a corner,” Big Red (7-1-1) head coach Annie Cutri said. “I love it when our girls get corners. We have girls in front of the net who are aggressive. We got a good service, and Brynn was able to get a head on it. The header was awesome. The service was perfect.
“We were able to score early. We were able to get up early, and that is something we wanted to do. We didn’t want to have to wait until the second half to get going. We were trying to get one early. We didn’t want to wait to get going.”
Gianna Thomas netted the first goal of the match off an assist from Lucy Saccoccia to give the Red and Black a 1-0 lead with 37:43 remaining to be played in the first half.
Brooke goalie Ivy Myers was injured in collision in the penalty box with 22:05 left to play before halftime. She was down on the field for a couple of minutes before being helped off pitch. She was replaced in goal by Paige Henderson. Henderson did not make a save in her time in the net before Myers returned to the field with 15:45 remaining in the half.
In between that period, the girls from Jefferson County extended their advantage to 2-0. Big Red was awarded a corner kick, and senior standout Bailee Beall took the kick from the far side of the field. The ball found its way to Brynn Bowers who headed it into the net to give the hosts a 2-0 lead with 20:35 left in the half.
The Bruins (3-6-1) had a chance on a breakaway in the first half, however, the shot sailed over the goal keeping Brooke off the scoreboard.
Myers ended up making two saves in the first half as did Big Red goalie Sadie Edwards.
Jodeci Green replaced Edwards in goal to start the second half. She also finished the match with a pair of saves.
The Green and Gold scored their lone goal of the match in the second half, however, the girls from Brooke County were unable to score the equalizer as Big Red was able to hold on for the win.
“We couldn’t find our flow in the second half,” Cutri said. “We still tried to attack, but we were forcing the ball down the line. We could not find our groove. We were up, so we ended up playing a lot of defense anyway.”
The girls in white threatened the girls in black in the second half, but they were unable to find the back of the net for the second time.
“They’re speedy,” Cutri said about the Bruins. “Their quick. They played a lot of balls over the top. They’re quick, so that made it tough. Them playing balls over the top made it tough on us.”
Brooke is scheduled to play rival John Marshall at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home.
Big Red is slated to play Jefferson County rival Edison at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at home.
