Golden Bears win the Country Roads Classic
NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen volleyball team got off to a great start to its season on Saturday.
The Golden Bears, who enter the season coming off back-to-back state final appearances, won all six matches in the annual Country Roads Classic, the season-opening tournament that it hosts, to claim the event title.
They won 12 of 13 sets in the event, not dropping one until the championship match.
They swept Wheeling Park, East Fairmont and Williamstown in the prelims, then swept Williamstown again in the quartefinal, John Marshall in the semis and defeated Herbert Hoover 2-1 in the final.
Leading the way for Oak Glen was Averi Martin with a combined 54 kills on the day, Mikalyn Balch with 126 assists, Brooklyn Six with 36 kills, Brayley Lash with 27 kills and Keria Vick with 29 digs.
CROSS COUNTRY
Edison has strong showing
PAINESVILLE — The Edison cross country team competed in the HOKA Kickoff Classic on Saturday, an event that featured more than 3,000 runners.
Edison’s girls placed seventh out of 51 teams in their division, led by Josie Lesnansky in 11th overall.
On the boys side, the Wildcats were 15th of 49 teams, led by Blaine Hoobler in 52nd overall.
