Brooke Shootout held to open girls golf season

WELLSBURG — The Brooke Shootout was held on Monday at Brooke Hills Park to begin the girls golf season in West Virginia.

Wheeling Park topped the five-team event with a team score of 126, 10 strokes better than Fairmont Senior.

Host Brooke came in third with a 150 and Weir High was two strokes behind the Bruins. Wheeling Central rounded out the field with a 155.

Park’s Alicia Harvath was the medalist with a low score of 39.

For Brooke, Elliot McDonald fired a 42, tied for the second best score of the day, while Brooke DeProspero turned in a 45, Grace Sheperd shot a 52 and Sophia Wilkerson turned in a 56.

The Red Riders got a 48 from Kaydence Cain and a 52 each from Lexi Shockley and Ila Dean.

Big Red tops 18-hole tri

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red golf team kept rolling on Monday, picking up two wins in an 18-hole tri at Steubenville Countty Club.

Steubenville fired a team score of 332 to top Weir High’s 357 and Edison’s 388.

Christopher Elliott was the medalist with a low score of 75, followed by an 80 from Jaggar Rawson, an 88 from Andrew Matzorkis and an 89 from Noah Kokiko.

For the Red Riders, Guy Meneely turned in an 84, Evan Kaczmarek fired an 89, Isaiah Smith shot a 91 and Micah Hvizdak turned in a 93.

Edison was led by a 91 from Isaiah Philburn, a 97 from Brady Haught and a 100 each from Luke Feralli and Jordan Everhart.

With the two victories, Big Red improved its dual record to 6-1 on the season.

Buckeye 8 first round held

CADIZ — The opening round of the Buckeye 8 golf championship was held on Monday at Cadiz Country Club, and the race for the conference title is a tight one.

Beaver Local turned in a team score of 314, just one stroke ahead of defending champ St. Clairsville.

Barnesville (328) is third, while Martins Ferry (330) is fourth and Brooke (335) rounds out the top five.

Other local teams include Indian Creek, which is sixth at a 352, while Buckeye Local is tied for seventh at 365. Harrison Central turned in a 380.

Barnesville’s Brady Gallagher leads an equally tight individual race at a 70, three strokes ahead of Buckeye Local’s Kamden Kinyo and four strokes better than St. C’s Mavrik Malin.

Creek’s leading individual is Riley Guskea with an 88. Harrison Central’s Cash Meadows turned in an 85 and Brooke’s top individual is Parker McMahon with an 83.

Three Bruins (Max Malinty, Colton Yensen and Andrew Petrella) sit at 84.

The second and final round of the Buckeye 8 tournament will be held Aug. 26 at Belmont Hills Country Club.

After the second round, the top six golfers will be named first team and the next six placers will be named honorable mention Buckeye 8 along with the crowning of the overall team champion.
