Huskies top CCHS for back-to-back victories

CADIZ — It’s been a good start to the week for Harrison Central.

After a disappointing season-opening loss to St. Clairsville, the Huskies (2-1) reeled off their second win in as many nights Tuesday, turning away visiting Catholic Central (0-3) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-17, 25-15.

The new additions to Harrison’s lineup at starting to gel with the veterans.

“We have a very heavy freshman team, between jayvee and varsity, we have 10 total,” Harrison Central head coach Grace Godich mentioned. “We’re young, have three returning starters, all learning the new pace of the game, especially the young girls but they are coming around really well.”

Two of those returners, Hannah and Leah Grady, stepped up big Tuesday.

Hannah Grady totaled six kills and eight assists while her older sister garnered five kills and seven assists.

Tuesday also served as a coming-out party for senior Jaylin Ward.

Ward, who played somewhat last season behind a large senior class of top-notch hitters, led Harrison Tuesday with eight kills while making her presence known in the middle with hard attacks and block attempts at the net.

“She has really been stepping up,” Godich said. “Her hands for blocking, and also her heating, they are really coming around and its working out in our favor.”

The two teams battled back and forth in the first set, with the Crusaders take a 13-12 lead before Harrison reeled 11 of the next 13 points. Ward tallied two kills during that rally alone.

Central tried to hang on but was having a little trouble early getting solid attack looks at the opposition.

In fact, it took until Karlie Nese recorded a kill to cut the lead to 20-15 for the Crusaders to record a point that didn’t either come from an ace or a service or attack error from the hosts.

Julia Nurczyk and Gianna Lemal each totaled three kills for the visitors, with Nurczyk adding a pair of aces and junior Maddie McEndree providing five assists.

Central didn’t quit, however.

After falling behind 13-2 in the final set, the Crusaders made a run and cut the lead to 19-15 before Harrison tallied the final six points to secure the win.

Next up for the Huskies is a Buckeye 8 road matchup on Thursday at Brooke.

The Crusaders will look to get in the win column on Aug. 27 against Madonna.
