Huskies run into tough Beaver Local in opener

CADIZ — Beaver Local was not the team Harrison Central needed for its season debut Thursday in Cadiz.

But that’s how the schedule shaped up and while the Huskies were playing their first game, Beaver came in with solid play and a spotless 2-0 record.

It didn’t take long for the Beavers to flex their muscles and behind a four-goal effort from Riley Springer, the visitors pulled away early for a decisive 13-0 victory.

The win pushes Beaver to 3-0 while Harrison dropped its opener and will look to go 1-1

The Beavers are skilled, fast, and experienced. Harrison, meanwhile, was taking the turf for the first time in four years with talented keeper Vanessa Dowdle in net.

Junior Lillianne Smith, who saw spot duty a season ago, drew the start. She was tested early and often.

Smith faced a total of 35 shots, turning away 22. Some saves were right at her, others required more finesse and a few dives from the keeper.

Beaver capitalized on its speed and passing ability to strike first, less than five minutes when Jansen Ours broke free on the right side and fired cross field just past Smith’s outstretched hands.

The next four minutes saw Beaver strike four more times, once each from Peyton Dunn, Ralyn Gilson and Leah Stewart, along with Ours’ second goal.

That’s when Springer took over, scoring her first two goals at the 26:27 and 24:27 mark of the first half. Beavers staff started subbing liberally, and the visitors didn’t strike again till Springer hit hat-triclk level at 26:52. She added her fourth roughly 40 seconds later.

Harrison, meanwhile, had trouble getting any solid runs going at the Beavers’ defense.

Owning a speed advantage, Beaver Local’s defenders were able to recover in the event of a misstep. In fact, Harrison’s only shot on goal in the first half came off a direct kick that neraly cleared the hands of Beaver keeper Tatum Duncan.

Duncan (2 saves) and Teneille Diaz-Wilson combined for five saves in limited work.

Goals from Lainie Bock, Emily Saphore, and Jessica Stoneburner also followed for the Beavers.

Next up for Beaver Local is a road date with Cambridge on Tuesday, while Harrison heads to Edison on Monday.
