Indian Creek’s district semifinal win Wednesday evening did not come down to the last pitch — far from it — but a description of it as “walking off” to victory would likewise be just a fitting as the Redskins drew 18 free passes in a 22-3 victory over John Glenn on a soggy Mazeroski Field.
In reaching the 20-win mark once again and getting back to the district championship, Creek needed just seven hits to score by far its highest run total of the season in the semis of the Division IV, East 2 bracket.
“That’s a first,” Indian Creek head coach Mike Cottis said of winning a game by 19 runs in which his team was out-hit. “We haven’t had much offense lately, but when we had opportunities to put the bat on the ball (Wednesday), we had some big hits. We were very patient and we had a good three or four days of practice leading up to this where we did a lot of work in 1-2 counts and being selective. It paid off and we were selective and got the pitches we needed.”
Creek, which is now 20-6 and the No. 2 seed, will meet No. 8 seed Claymont at 5 p.m. Friday at Buckeye Trail in the district championship. Creek is looking for back-to-back district titles after winning the district last spring in Division II under the old format.

On Wednesday, Creek ace Sylus Hyde fired 3 1/3 innings, departing with a runner on, which later scored, and his team up 11-0 on the scoreboard after scattering three hits and striking out six and walking five. He exited at a low enough pitch count that he could be available on Friday, though Sal Barcalow will get the ball to start against the Mustangs.
James Brothers came on and went the final 1 2/3 innings, striking out one and walking one.
While Creek did not have a lot of hits, they did have some big ones. Ty Householder started the bottom of the first off with a triple and scored on Hunter Rusnak’s sac fly for a quick 1-0 lead and Creek would never trail.
An inning later, Logan Wedlake, who finished with three hits and three RBIs, knocked a bases-clearing double to make it 4-0, which proved to be enough offense.
Gavin Pownall had an RBI single in the third. Creek scored five more runs in the inning, three on bases-loaded walks and two on wild pitches.

An inning later, they really broke things open with 11 runs — seven on RBI walks and two on hit by pitches, another on an error and one on a Wedlake single.
