Edison baseball downs Buckeye Local

RICHMOND — If pitching wins championships, the Edison baseball team is in good shape.

Edison received another strong outing on the mound against Jefferson County foe Buckeye Local, and the Wildcats were able to pull away from the Panthers en route to a 6-0 victory on an overcast Saturday afternoon out at the Edison Unified Sports Complex.

Edison starter Cash Meadows did not give up a hit until the last batter he faced. That at-bat came with two outs in the top of the seventh inning.

Meadows recorded the win for the Silver and Black as he struck out five and walked three during his time on the mound. Cole Pittman came on in relief, and he retired the only batter he faced enabling the Wildcats to come away with the shutout victory.

“Cash battled,” Edison (4-0) head coach Mike Collopy said. “He did a really good job. He was our No. 4 pitcher last year. He has a bright future if he keeps pitching this way. He has gotten bigger. He has gotten stronger. He is a competitor.

“Our defense behind him was outstanding. Nolan Haught at shortstop made some really tough plays on some balls. I am proud of the guys.”

The shutout was Edison’s third of the season. The Wildcats have only allowed one run all season.

“Coach (Mark) Smyth has done a great job with our pitchers the last four years,” Collopy said. “He is somebody who was a really good player. He played in the Frontier League. He has taken what he has learned, and he is passing it on to the guys. He is doing an outstanding job.”

Edison’s four-run sixth inning broke the game open.

“We shot ourselves in the foot,” Buckeye Local (0-3) head coach Jeff Patrick said. “We gave them too many free bases. We made it easier on them. Edison is well coached. We let the game get away from us.”

Kaleb Stang took the loss for the Panthers. Stang struck out three and walked one in his five innings of work. Dominic Kempton came on to pitch the sixth. He did not record a strikeout while walking one in his inning of work.

Edison delivered 12 hits in the game – three of which were doubles.

Individually, Evan Kimmerle tallied two singles, a double and an RBI, Bryce Rogers recorded a single, a double and two RBI and Meadows added a single, a double and an RBI. Also, Kyle Long contributed an RBI triple, Jackson McBane ended up with a single and an RBI and Kayden Russell collected two singles. Finally, JD Henderson delivered a single.

“Coach (Cory) Wickham has done a great job working with our hitters,” Collopy said. “We are grinding out at-bats. We’re getting hits. We’re putting the ball in play. We’re focused. We were able to score some more runs late in the game.”

Stang singled the Buckeye Local’s lone hit.

“Their pitcher located his pitches really well,” Patrick said. “He had a no-hitter through 6 2/3 innings.”

The game was scoreless going into the third, however, Long plated the first run of the game to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

“I was a radar watcher,” Patrick said. “I am glad we were able to play here at Edison. They have a really nice facility. I talked to Coach Collopy a couple of times last night and a couple of times today. I am happy we were able to get outside and play baseball. I just wish we had a different result.”

The victors increased their advantage to 2-0 with a run in the fifth before taking control of the game by scoring four runs in the sixth.

“There is a big difference between being up 2-0 as compared to 6-0,” Collopy said. “When you are up 2-0, if they get a couple of guys on, they are right there.

“The kids are doing a really good job. They are working hard. They are taking our coaching. They are great kids from great families. They are responding.”

Both teams are scheduled to take the field Monday.

Edison is slated to play Route 43 foe Carrollton at 5 p.m. at home, while Buckeye Local is set to play East Liverpool at 5 p.m. on the road.
