Creek battles past Brooke and the elements
WELLSBURG — The Indian Creek softball team continues to hit the ball and score runs.
Indian Creek plated four runs in the top of the first inning against Brooke, and the Redskins pulled away to defeat the Bruins, 14-3, in five innings in less than ideal weather conditions Thursday evening on the road.
“We knew it would be iffy if we were able to get this game in,” Indian Creek (3-4) head coach Angela Penner said. “Now, they are calling for rain this weekend. There is a possibility of snow Tuesday. It is going to get cold.
“We had to prepare for the weather. We were not sure if we were going to be able to get this game in. I want to thank Brooke and their crew for working hard and getting the field ready to play.
“Brooke is working hard trying to manufacture runs. They hit the ball too.
“I am proud of the girls. We have great senior leadership. We have played a lot of close games. The Martins Ferry game was 9-7, Buckeye Local was 8-7, they won and then St. Clairsville was 13-12. We are trying to stay sharp. We are working to correct our mistakes in the field and with our pitching and our battery.
“The girls are working hard. They may not like to hear us, but they are working hard. We are improving. We have good senior leadership. We have good camaraderie. The girls all get along. We’re learning.
“I always say, it is not how you start, but how you finish.
“We hit the ball today. We had some good hits. We have a great group of kids. They are really working hard.”
Both teams had to deal with the rain and sloppy field conditions.
“The conditions were not great,” Brooke (0-11) assistant coach Jade Georgetti said. “We have definitely played in a lot better weather.”
The Bruins plated two runs in the bottom of the first to cut their deficit in half, however, the Redskins recorded three more runs in the second to build a five-run advantage.
The visitors from Jefferson County tallied three more runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to increase their advantage to 11 runs.
The hosts collected a run in the fourth, however, the hosts did not score in the fifth, bringing the game to a close.
Payton Rath produced the win for the visitors. She struck out two and walked two.
“Our pitcher — Payton Rath — pitched a good game,” Penner said. “McKenna Scott has been pitching well. Pitching is a hard job, and Payton Rath did a very nice job throwing the win today.”
Eden McKinney took the loss for Brooke. She struck out four and walked four.
The victors recorded 14 hits in the win, including three for extra bases.
Individually, Kylie Dray tallied a single, a home run and three RBI, Riley Sadler recorded two singles, a double and three RBI and Olivia Hollenbeck contributed a single, a double and two RBI. Also, Rath collected a single and two RBI, Emma Vok chipped in with a two singles and an RBI and McKenna Puskarich produced a single and an RBI. Finally, McKenna Scott singled twice, and Tori Gross singled once.

Individually, Emilee McKinney collected a single and two RBI, Emma Michel tallied a double and an RBI and Jazz Wood doubled. Also, Gabby Hornick contributed two singles, and Maggie Diserio and Dipaolo each produced a base hit.
“We are playing a lot better,” Georgetti said. “We have gotten better. We struggled early on in the season to get hits, but we are doing a much better job of hitting the ball.”
“They are a good team,” Penner said. “They are young. We are going to be in a lot of games.”
