WEIRTON — Big Red head coach Fred Heatherington has been saying his team has been getting better. The proof of that showed up on the field for a second-straight game Monday.

Big Red went over to Weir High, jumped on the Red Riders early and rolled to an 11-2 victory, their second-straight win.

Steubenville pounded out a dozen hits in the win and did not commit an error in the field, while Hayden Hicks tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts.

“We’re getting better, we just have to keep playing,” Heatherington said. “In baseball, you just have to keep playing. We’ve had great practices, we need to take that onto the field in the games and the last two we have done that. We’ve got to keep it going.”

The hits weren’t just singles for Big Red (2-3), either, as they got a pair of doubles from catcher Kail Simmons and a triple from second baseman Nolan Blackburn. Hicks went 3 for 5 at the plate to go with his performance on the mound and also drove in a pair of runs, as did AJ Borsch.

In total, eight of nine players in the line up had a hit and seven different players drove in a run.

“We had a good, quick start,” Heatherington said. “We put some runs on the board early, we kind of hit a lull a little bit in the middle of the game but we put some more runs up late.”

Hicks worked his way out of a couple of jams and worked around three walks and six hits, finishing just under the pitch count limit as he was able to go the distance, his second complete game in as many starts.

“He threw good, he threw a lot of pitches but he worked out of some jams,” Heatherington said. “They put the ball in play and we made the plays.”

Big Red scored four runs in the top of the first and led 6-0 before the Red Riders (4-6) got on the board with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third.

That would be the only inning they scored in as Hicks shut it down from there, and the Big Red bats continued to add to the lead, a three-run sixth inning helping put things away.

“They jumped on us early,” Weir head coach Dave Cowden said. “We gave them a lot of extra bases, overthrows, not hitting our cuts, passed balls, you can’t give a good team extra outs and extra bases.

“They threw their horse and he threw well. They’re a good team, they put the ball in play and do all the little things.

“That’s baseball, we’ll get back after it.”

The Red Riders got a two-run double from Aleks Zanieski, while Teddy Glyptis also had an extra base knock and Jonathan Horstman had two singles.

“We have a young group of kids, we’re making strides, it’s just a matter of putting it all together,” Cowden said.
