STEUBENVILLE — An angry team can be a dangerous team.

Steubenville Big Red certainly showed that on Monday.

Two days removed from a frustrating loss in the OVAC Championship on Saturday, Big Red took out some of those frustrations in a hurry against the visiting International Sports Academy team out of Sandusky in their regular season finale, scoring 35 first quarter points on the way to a 70-30 victory.

“It was a good bounce back,” Big Red head coach Mike Haney said. “The kids came out a bit angry because of the loss (Saturday) They played hard right from the tip and got after it, forced some turnovers, played good defense and shot the ball well, really well from the 3-point line.”

Big Red started on fire, holding a 35-2 lead after one quarter and leading 51-8 at halftime. Steubenville, which finishes the regular season portion of its schedule with a strong mark of 18-3, got its shooting back on track, hitting nearly 70 percent from two and better than 40 percent on 3s. They hit 10 shots from beyond the arc.

Of the 10 triples, Big Red hit seven of them in the opening eight minutes. Aiden Davis, who led Big Red with 16 points, swished three of his four triples in the first quarter.

“It was good for us to see some shots fall,” Haney said. “The big thing is we were playing good, high-intensity defense and it seems like our shots fall when we’re doing that.”

Big Red got every player dressed into the game, 10 different players contributing to the scoring totals.

In addition to Davis, Will Taylor tallied 13 points while Santino Haney and Tre’Von Wiggins each netted 12 points.

JoJo Rea had a team-high eight rebounds.

Big Red will now turn its focus to Friday night’s tournament opener. Steubenville is the top seed in the Division III, East District field and will host third-seeded New Philadelphia with the opening tip set for 6 p.m.

“The real fun starts now, it’s the best time of the year,” coach Haney said. “You win and move on or pack up and go home and we don’t want that to happen. We’ll get back to work and get ready for Friday.”
