East Liverpool pulls away from Indian Creek
WINTERSVILLE — The Indian Creek boys’ basketball team battled against East Liverpool, but ultimately the Potters’ athleticism was too much for the Redskins to handle.
East Liverpool led by nine at the end of the first quarter, and the visitors led by more than 30 in the fourth as The Potters defeated the Redskins, 64-34, Tuesday on Coach D Court.
“Their pressure defense created turnovers,” Indian Creek (0-3) head coach Joe Dunlevy said. “They got offensive rebounds, and off those rebounds they were able to score some baskets. That was the story of the game.”
The boys from Columbiana County took a 17-8 lead at the end of the first, and they extended their advantage to 33-13 at halftime.
“We got out on them on defense, and we were able to get stops on defense,” first-year East Liverpool (4-0) head coach Kade Reynolds said. “They are very fundamental, and we were able to get stops and get out and run. When we are able to get out and run, we are tough to beat.”
Caleb Bodo collected a team-high 10 points to lead the way for the hosts, while Kaide Hanes delivered five.
“It is an honor to go up against Coach Dunlevy,” Reynolds said. “He’s a legend. He’s a walking hall of famer. His teams are always super fundamental. You know what you are going to get. He could take any give guys, and you know they are going to be fundamentally sound and well coached.
Quintin Conrad and D’Shawn Kirby each tallied 10 points to lead the way for the Blue-and-White, while Cohen Pease produced nine points on three 3-pointers.
“They play hard,” Dunlevy said. “They do what their coach tells them to do.”
The boys in black increased their advantage to 51-19 entering the fourth.
“We have gotten off to a good start,” Reynolds said. We’re 4-0. We beat back-to-back state champs in Lincoln Park. We still have things we have to clean up. We have to cut down on our turnovers. We have some things we have to shore up, but we have gotten off to a great start.”
East Liverpool is scheduled to play Harrison Central Thursday night on the road.
Indian Creek is slated to play Beaver Local Saturday afternoon at home. The JV game is set to start at 1 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
