Hicks fires a no-hitter to lead Big Red

STEUBENVILLE — Thanks to a gem on the mound, the Big Red baseball team’s winning streak has grown to eight games. 

Hayden Hicks struck out eight Brooke batters on the way to firing a no-hitter to shut down the Bruins and lead Steubenville to a 2-0 victory Thursday at the Crimson Complex. 

The win moves Big Red to 9-2, while Brooke drops to 8-7, and gives Steubenville a season sweep of the Bruins. 

Both of Big Red’s runs came with two outs in the bottom of the second. 

Bubby Reese’s RBI walk plated the first run, then Aydan Manning, who went 2 for 2 with a double and a walk, drew another bases loaded walk to bring across the second and final run of the game. 

Caleb Billick struck out five for Brooke. 

Brody Saccoccia and Matt Fabbro also tallied base knocks for Big Red. 

Five-run fifth lifts Creek

MINGO JUNCTION — The Indian Creek baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning to erase an early hole and top visiting Beaver Local 5-3 on Thursday. 

Stan Amis had a double and an RBI, while Gavin and Landon Pownall and Ty Householder each tallied an RBI. 

SOFTBALL 

Toronto edges Bridgeport 

TORONTO — The Toronto softball team plated two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings to earn a comeback 5-4 over Bridgeport on Thursday. 

Laney Danko had a double, two hits and two RBIs, while Callie Anderson had a pair of hits and an RBI and LeighAnne Anderson fanned four in the circle. 

Oak Glen tops Creek 

WINTERSVILLE — The Oak Glen softball team bounced back with a big win, 8-4, at Indian Creek on Thursday. 

Mattie Carney was 3 for 4 with a triple, homer and three RBIs, while Riley Bruce also homered and drove in three runs and Carney fanned seven in the circle. 

For Creek, McKenna Scott had three hits and Trinity Taylor had a triple, single and struck out 11 pitching. 

LATE WEDNESDAY 

Brooke gets first win 

WELLSBURG — The Brooke softball team rallied back from down two to walk-off their first win of the season, 3-2, over section rival Wheeing Park on Wednesday. 

Madison Brown scored on a dropped third strike to provide the winning run, while Alexa Foresha’s RBI double in the sixth knotted the score. 

Foresha fanned five for the win in the circle.

Toronto wins big 

TORONTO — The Toronto baseball team got a huge day from Dom Boucher to top River 12-1 on Wednesday. 

Boucher had a homer, two triples and finished with six RBIs, while Nate Brownfield drove in three runs and Aiden Filby got the win on the mound.
