WEIRTON -- The Madonna softball team had a game to forget against Beaver Local.
With the score tied at 1 after three innings, the Beavers recorded 13 runs in the next two innings en route to a 14-1 victory in five innings Friday evening at Starvaggi Park.
"A lot of our softball IQ was exposed today," Madonna (12-6) head coach Jason Backel said. "We did not show up. I'm very disappointed."
Beaver Local got off to a slow start offensively as the girls from Columbiana County had just one hit entering the fourth, however, their bats came alive in the next two innings as the girls in red recorded 13 runs on nine hits in the final two innings.
"We played well," Beaver Local (5-7-1) pitcher Ciara Call said. "We scored a lot of runs."
Call collected the win for her team inside the circle. Call struck out five and walked two.
Kendal Ryan took the loss for the Blue Dons. She struck out one and walked three.
The girls from Hancock County collected just two hits on the day while committing five errors.
The visitors committed two errors.
Both teams scored a run on an error in the first.
Addison Eells singled with two outs, and she moved up to second on a wild pitch and scored on an error giving the Red and White an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The girls in blue answered right back in the bottom half of the inning.
With one out, Ella Wingett reached on an error, she advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored another error to knot the score at 1.
Neither team scored in the next two innings setting the stage for the Beavers to break the game open.
Beaver Local tallied nine runs in the fourth to take a 10-1 lead, and the victors plated four more in the fifth to increase their advantage to 14-1.
Offensively, Tori Druschel tallied two singles and two RBI, Alain Bock collected a two-run single and Eells singled twice and had an RBI. Also, Ally Wright, Tatum Duncan and Call all contributed a single and an RBI, and Lora Reeder and Sydney Wilson-Plunkett each produced a single. All nine batters reached safely for the Beavers as Delany Morris drew a walk.
"I pitched well," Call said. "The team hit the ball well."
Ally Laughlin and Rylee Birkhimer each tallied a base hit for the hosts.
"We have to have a short memory," Backel said. "We have a doubleheader tomorrow. We have to come out and play.
"We are going to make the OVAC playoffs, but if we play like we did today in the OVAC playoffs, our stay in the OVAC playoffs will be short-lived.
"Along with the errors, we threw the ball to wrong the base. We let flyballs drop. It is very disappointing."
Beaver Local is scheduled to play a doubleheader against Union Local starting at noon today at home.
"They will be the sixth and seventh games of the week," Beaver Local head coach Mark Cashdollar said.
Madonna is slated to play a doubleheader against Wellsville starting at 1 p.m. today on the road. The games against the Tigers will be the third and fourth games the Blue Dons have played this week against teams from Columbiana County.
Madonna defeated East Liverpool, 10-3, Thursday at home.
