Edison gets Morrison her first victory, topping Brooke

WELLSBURG - Edison didn't let a disappointing 3-2 loss to Weir affect its mental state Wednesday in Wellsburg.
The Wildcats (1-1) led 3-1 entering the third, only to watch Brooke storm back to knot the score.
Undeterred, Edison put two across the next half inning and starting hitting solid line drives of Brooke starter Alexa Foresha.
The result? A 9-3 Wildcats' win that gives first-year head coach McKenzie Morrison her initial coaching victory.
That wasn't her concern, however, rather, she was happy with her team's effort and ability to forge ahead after a disappointing defeat.
"I was proud of the girls, proud of their at bats and the way they worked," Morrison said. "We bounced back and were ready to go. Lex is a good pitcher and we were able to bounce back from that loss and come ready to play."
Shrieve didn't pitch poorly. Far from it. She struck out seven wildcats. The run total is deceptive as four of those were unearned.
The five errors, including key miscues in the first and fifth inning were costly.
Head coach Tom Diserio has watched his team battle winless through seven games, competiting against some of the Ohio Valley's, and state of West Virginia's best.
Some scores haven't been particularly close, but many were. Wins are within reach, but the team needs to tighten up the defense according to its coach.
They have a good, solid hitting team and the fielded well too," Diserio said of Edison. "The home runs, you really can't defend them, but the routine plays we need to make and work on.
"We shot ourselves in the foot with a couple miscues on defense. We need the defense to back up Lex and help her out and that didn't happen."
Tied at three, Edison led off the top half of the fourth with back to back singles from Grace Bronwing and Sophia Henderson.
Hannah Russell's dropped a sac bunt down to move the runners with the first out. Paige Somerville hit a hard grounder to third and Emily McKinney alertly went home to get Browning out for the second out.
Brooke nearly exited the inning unscatched, but a hard-hit grounder to the right side from Mylie Powley wasn't fielded cleanly, allowing two runs to score.
The next half inning, Alie Shrieve sat the Bruins down in order, striking out the second and third batter. Shrieve led off the top of the fourth and crushed a Foresha offering deep over the fence in left center. Two outs later, Henderson doubled in Abi Boka for run No. 7.
Boka and Henderson later drove in the Wildcats' final two runs in the seventh inning.
Shrieve was strung, striking out eight and allowing three runs on seven hits, pitching a shutout during the final four innings. Pressley Meadows drove in two runs on a pair of doubles, while Henderson finished 3-of-4 with a pair of two baggers.
McKinney went 3-for-4 for the Bruins with an RBI while Foresha added a run-producing double.
