WEIRTON -- The Madonna boys' basketball team broke open a close game against Beallsville, and the Blue Dons never looked back.
Leading by four in the second quarter, Madonna ripped off a 13-0 run to pull away en route to a 59-27 victory Tuesday night inside the Dube Dome.
"It was a happy night for the Blue Dons," Madonna (10-11) head coach George Vargo said. "Everybody got to play. I don't know if everybody scored, but everybody played.
"It was a good game coming off last night and Friday which went down to the wire. The kids had fun tonight, and we were able to come out with a W."
The Blue Dons led 11-3 at the end of the first, however, the Blue Devils did not throw in the towel as the visitors pulled to within 13-9 in the second. Madonna countered with its 13-0 spurt, and the hosts took a 30-10 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
"Give credit to Beallsville," Vargo said. "This is what high school sports are about. Beallsville did not cancel the game. Beallsville did not forfeit the game. They manned up and came up to play. That is what high school sports is about. There was sportsmanship and intensity on the court."
The visitors from Monroe County played the game with just six players.
The hosts led 43-17 after the third, and the boys in white led by as many as 32 points.
Anthony Mascio scored a game-high 15 points to lead the way offensively for Madonna, while Luca Muzzi collected 11.
Kayson Hoff finished with a team-high 11 points to lead the way for Beallsville, while Ayson McBride tallied 10.
Madonna is scheduled to play St. Marys tonight at home. There will be a two-quarter JV game starting at 6 p.m. with the varsity game to follow.
"St. Marys is a good basketball team," Vargo said. "St. Marys always does a nice job.
"Tonight was nice. We didn't get home last night until quarter to 11. We have three games this week. We play Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. I have no complaints. I wish we could play Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday every week. It takes a lot of energy out of the kids, but it builds team chemistry really quick."
Beallsville is slated to play Newcomerstown at 6 p.m. Thursday night on the road.
