Edison’s offense catches fire, downs Brooke

RICHMOND — Sometimes a little confidence from seeing the ball go through the hoop is all it takes.
That was the case for the Edison girls basketball team Wednesday night.
The Wildcats, after struggling early and trailing visiting Brooke by five late in the second quarter, made a couple of shots late in the first half to head into the locker room with the lead and momentum.
The result of that momentum carrying over to the second half was 18-straight points and a game-sealing run that spanned through the third quarter and swelled to 31-4 on the way to a 57-33 victory at home in an OVAC consolation pool game.
“We have the ability to score a ton, it’s just a matter of when it all comes together,” Edison head coach Mark Smyth said. “Obviously in the third quarter it came together. Some shots started to fall, and when our shots start to fall it helps us get energetic on defense and create a little bit of chaos and get easy buckets.
“We’re a very streaky team. When we shoot the ball well, we shoot the ball really well. When we don’t shoot the ball well, we really struggle. When we start to see the ball go through the hoop we become a much better team (confidence wise).”
Once the ball got rolling, it was a little bit of everyone filling the net for the now 11-9 Wildcats as four Edison players reached double figures and nine different players factored into the scoring.
Kylee Stull led the way with 13 points, while Sophia Henderson, Pressly Meadows and Rebecka Evans each tallied 11.
“That’s the cool thing about this team this year, we’ve had a few games now where we’ve had three or four players in double digits,” Smyth said. “We had four of our five starters in double digits (Wednesday) and our first player off the bench was close to double figures in assists. We don’t make it easy to key on one girl, we have girls that can score and girls that can come off the bench and score.”
The Bruins (0-16) led 11-9 after one quarter and held leads of 20-15 and 21-17 late in the second quarter. From there, though, Brooke went cold and Edison took over.
The Bruins’ Rylee Schwertfeger led them with 10 points, all in the first half helping the Bruins get the lead. Edison held her off the scoresheet in the second half until she left the game with an injury.
Edison out-scored the Bruins 33-12 in the second half, including 26-4 in the third quarter.
With the Wildcats varsity squad on their way to victory in the fourth quarter, it was announced Edison’s seventh and eighth grade girls basketball teams won their respective BMC tournament titles.
“Our seventh-grade team went 15-0 and won the BMC and our eighth-grade team went 14-3 after being 5-9 last year and won the title, too,” Smyth said. “That’s really exciting for the program, the future is bright. It was a great night to be a Wildcat. Our middle school coaches and players did a great job.”
