WINTERSVILLE -- The Indian Creek football team is looking to break through and put points up on the scoreboard this week against Beaver Local.
The Beavers have scored at least 14 points in every game this season, while the Redskins have only scored in double digits in the team's season-opening victory against Cambridge.
Beaver Local and Indian Creek will meet at 7 p.m. Friday night at Kettlewell Stadium.
Both teams enter the game coming off of losses on the road.
Harrison Central defeated Indian Creek, 32-6, last Friday night out at Wagner Field.
"I thought we played fairly consistent on defense," Indian Creek (1-6) head coach Andrew Connor said. "I know that is a weird thing to say when you give up 32 points, but they a big pass play for a score early, and then they had another big pass right before halftime. We had a goal line stand.
"I think Mykel Quioto hurt us with some downhill runs.
"I thought we played hard defensively, but we are given up too many big plays. That is our Achilles' heel right now. I think we are playing well defensively and we get them to third down, but then we gave up a touchdown or a big play.
"I am proud of their effort. They are playing hard. Teams just keep getting big plays, and we cannot let that happen."
Beaver Local comes into the game off of a 29-25 loss to Hubbard. All three of the Beavers' loss this season have come from teams from the Northeast 8.
"The (Austin) Cline kid is very good," Connor said. "He's a college prospect. The use him, and so would I have I had him. He can run, and he can throw. He's like their point guard. He distributes the ball very well.
"They do run the ball more, but they can pass. They spread you out, and they run open formations. They make you defend everything, and that is a tough thing to do."
Beaver Local is coached by former Edison head coach Mike McKenzie.
"Their coach does a good job," Connor said. "He has a good program. He puts the right kids in the right places."
Cline is only one of a handful of weapons the boys from Columbiana County have in their arsenal.
"They have a good tailback," Connor said. "They can throw the ball too. They have some good receivers. They have a nice tight end. They don't have a guy, but they have a bunch of kids that they can spread the ball around too."
The Red-and-White have tallied 41 more points in a game four times this season.
Defensively, the Beavers have posted one shutout this season, however, they have struggled at times stopping the opposition from putting points on the scoreboard. Beaver Local has given up at least 20 points five times.
"They run a 4-3," Connor said. "Their down linemen do a good job of boxing things in. They make it difficult for teams to get to the outside.
"Their linebackers get downhill quickly. They tackle well. Their secondary does a good job of defending the pass. They have a quality defense. They make things difficult for you on offense.
"Offensively, we are going to have to make sure we come up with a good game plan, and we have to make sure we do a good job of executing that game plan if we are going to be successful Friday night."
Neither team has a big advantage in the size department.
"We're about even," Connor said. "We are about even in speed, strength and size."
The Redskins moved the ball last week against the Huskies, however, they once again had difficulty finishing off drives and scoring points.
"Last week, we did a good job on offense, but we just could not score," Connor said. "We picked up a lot of yards. I think we had 260 yards rushing. That's a good total, but we are just not scoring points.
"That has been our Achilles' heel on offense. We are able to move the ball, but we just can't finish. That is something we are working on. We are working on that vigorously. We need to be able to finish drives.
"I thought our defense did a good job. We played with a lot more energy. Our defense has done a good job. We have played well on defense.
"Our kids work hard. They work hard every day. They still come to practice every day and try to get better. It's the same thing with our coaching staff. We just have to try and get better every day."
The Beavers defeated the Redskins, 56-13, last season at home.
Beaver Local enters the game ranked No. 9 in the Ohio Division IV Region 13 rankings.
