CAMERON -- The Oak Glen football team is going to have its hands full this week -- especially on defense -- against Cameron.
The Golden Bears will look to snuff out the Dragons when the two teams meet at 7 p.m. Friday night down at Dragon Field.
Both teams come into the game on streaks. For Oak Glen, the boys from Hancock County have lost their last three games, while the boys from Marshall County have collected victories in their last six games.
Oak Glen enters the game coming off a 40-20 loss to East Liverpool in the annual "Battle of the Bridge" game last Friday night on Senior Night at home.
"I thought we played a good first quarter and at the start of the second quarter," Oak Glen (1-7) head coach Doug Taylor said. "After that, East Liverpool's athleticism took over. They had a lot of big plays.
"Hats off to East Liverpool. They had a good game plan. We just have to forget about it and move on."
On the other side, Cameron (6-1) comes in off a 59-6 victory against Clay-Battelle at home.
"Once again, it is like jumping from the frying pan and into the fire," Taylor said. "They are another state ranked West Virginia Single-A opponent. I'm not sure where they get them, but they have a great crop of athletes. They are not big, but they make big plays.
"Their quarterback is a three-year starter. I think this is Coach Brown's fifth year, and he is doing a real good job. They are a capable opponent for us even though they are Single-A.
"They are not overly big. They are quick. They like to throw the ball. They run off of their passing.
"Defensively, they are real aggressive. They run a 3-3 stack. We have only seen that a couple of times this season. It is going to create problems for us.
"We are going to have to limit our offense. We are going to have to figure out which ones will work.
Following a 28-24 loss to West Greene in Week 1, the Dragons have been on fire offensively as Cameron has scored 36 or more points in all six of their victories. The Dragons have scored 321 points during the winning streak for average of more than 53 points per game.
"They lost their season opener, but since then they have been on a tear," Taylor said. "They have scored like 40, 50 and 60 points."
During the winning streak, Cameron has defeated Hundred (56-20), Frontier (52-0), Magnolia (54-6), Madonna (36-0), Valley (64-14) and Clay-Battelle.
The Dragons have also been getting the job done defensively as they have allowed just 46 points per game during the winning streak for an average of less than eight points a game.
"They have a real good defense," Taylor said.
Cameron is currently in 11th place in the West Virginia Class A rankings.
"For us, it is the same thing week in and week out," Taylor said. "We have to keep their offense off the field. We have to have success on offense. It is the same with every team we play.
"We need to put drives together. We don't need to score on every drive, but we have to be able to flip the field. We have to take the pressure off our defense."
Cameron shut out Oak Glen, 28-0, last season up at the Bears Den.
"We have to be able to stay in front of the chains," Taylor said. "We have to be able to convert 3rd-and-short. We have to stay out of 3rd-and-long. We will go for it if it is 4th-and-short.
"We need to maintain drives. We have to force them to go 70 or 80 yards. We have not done a good job of that. We can't make mistakes. We can't hurt ourselves with penalties or missing blocks."
Taylor also coached against Cameron when he was the head coach at Madonna.
"They have got a nice stadium," Taylor said. "We played them when I was at Madonna. The stadium was grass then. They have done a nice job with the stadium and the school. They have a nice facility."
It could rain Friday night.
"It is supposed to rain," Taylor said. "That is something we are going to have to be prepared for.. I don't know if it will be problem"
Oak Glen played in the pouring rain earlier this season against Berkeley Springs.
"It won't be like that," Taylor said. "We are pretty healthy. We have some guys who are nicked up. We have a couple of guys who will be game-time decisions. We are close to be 100 percent healthy. We want to go down there and put our best foot forward."
