Bruins face a tough test vs. University
WELLSBURG -- The Brooke football team looks to remain undefeated while University is looking to bounce back after suffering a loss last week.
The Bruins and the Hawks are scheduled to meet at 7:30 p.m. Friday night on Paul "Bud" Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.
Brooke enters the game coming off of a 28-7 win against Indian Creek last Thursday at Kettlewell Stadium.
"We played really good defensively," Brooke (2-0) head coach Mac McLean said. "We wanted to keep their tailback under 100 yards, and we were able to do that.
"We had some really bad field position in the first half. In the second half, our offense started to roll. We had some scoring drives to put the game away."
Brooke quarterback Braelyn Sperringer threw for 177 yards and two touchdowns, while also running for 22 yards and a touchdown on the ground to lead the Bruins past the Redskins.
On the other hand, University (1-1) enters this week's game coming off of a 72-34 loss to Parkersburg South Friday night at Mylan Pharmaceutical Stadium in Morgantown.
"Parkersburg South was the state runner-up last year," McLean said. "They have been on a roll down there. I don't buy into the final score. Parkersburg South is a beast. University is a tough team, and we are going to be ready Friday night."
University opened the season with a 42-7 victory at home against John Marshall.
"Their quarterback is a young guy," McLean said. He's mobile. He can sling the ball down the field. He's not afraid to throw 50-50 balls, and he has wide receivers who can go up and win those 50-50 balls.
"They can also run the ball. They have a big tailback. He's 290 pounds. They like to throw the ball, but they can the ball to."
Quarterback Luke Hudson completed 21-of-41 passes for 309 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in the Hawks loss to the Patriots. One of the interceptions came in the third quarter when he was intercepted at the Parkersburg South 6 with his team trailing 44-27 at the time.
University allowed 543 yards and six touchdowns on the ground, while also allowing 258 yards and four more scores through the air in its loss to Parkersburg South. For the Patriots, Gage Wright tallied 376 yards and four touchdowns on the ground on just 16 carries, and he also caught a 28-yard touchdown pass.
"Wright is a special talent," McLean said. "We don't have a guy like that in our huddle like Parkersburg South did."
