COLUMN: Signing days are special

Andrew Grimm

I will never forget the first time I covered a signing day. Admittedly I was a little befuddled seeing a schedule starting me off bright and early, rather than letting me be the night owl I grew to accept. Working in the sports department at a newspaper will do that to you.

But now, I remember more than that. Once I got to the first stop that day, I saw how happy and excited everyone there was. It then occurred to me how special these moments are for local athletes and their families.

For some, it’s the realization of dream to continue to play their favorite sport, or to be able to have a path to get a college education maybe they did not think possible — or a combination of both.

Both are not a reality for the majority of athletes. Just an estimated seven percent of high school athletes go on to play in college at any level.

But, for those who do get to sign, it is truly a special day — for them and their families. A moment they get to spend with those closest to them, family and coaches that each played a role in getting them there, gathered around the table.

No, the typical signing day in the Ohio Valley doesn’t come with ESPN cameras and a dramatic selection process where cameras flash when a young athlete chooses from a selection of hats laid out in front of them, but the dream and opportunity to keep playing — and continue an education — is just as special for our local athletes.

Another of these signing days arrived yesterday with several athletes across the area putting pen to paper. The rooms were filled with the same smiles and happiness.

And, more will sign in the coming days and weeks, and later on for different sports.

Congratulations to our local athletes getting the chance to play at the next level and best of luck.

Your smiles are contagious.
