WELLSBURG -- The Brooke girls soccer team controlled the ball and the match against Madonna.
The Bruins recorded four goals in the first half en route to a 4-0 victory Tuesday night on senior night on Paul "Bud" Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.
"It was a good night for the girls," Brooke (8-11) head coach Jack Minger said.
The hosts took 19 shots on goal in the match, while the visitors did not have any.
"They're a tough team," first-year Madonna (3-6) head coach Adam Welsh said. "It was still a really good game.
"We continue to get better at possessing the ball. Our communication is good. Our effort is great. I am proud of the girls."
Payton Adler tallied two goals to lead the way offensively for the Green-and-Gold while Johnna Lahita collected a goal and an assist. Also, Mikayla Childers delivered a goal.
Both teams used two goalies.
Hannah Buterbaugh started in goal, and she played the first half. Michaela Villa played the second half for the girls in green.
Julia Wingett started and played the first half in goal for the visitors from Hancock County. Wingett tallied nine saves on the night. Mia Chiodo came on start the second half. Chiodo made six saves.
"They are dealing with a lot of injuries," Minger said. "Madonna is usually very competitive. They are just dealing with a lot of injuries."
At times in each half, the Blue Dons played with just 10 players on the field.
"We have a girl coming back from a new injury last season," Welsh said. "We are easing her back in. She does a great job when she is in there.
"It is nice to be able to play with 11 girls on the field. We have not been able to do that a lot this season. It is nice when we are able to have everyone out there. Hopefully, we can have all out there for a sectional game Monday against Magnolia."
Childers opened the scoring when she found the back of the net with 33:59 left to play in the first half giving the Bruins a 1-0 advantage.
The victors struck again less than eight minutes later. This time, Adler recorded her first goal off an assist by Lahita increasing Brooke's advantage to 2-0 with 26:25 remaining to be played in the first half.
"We possessed the ball," Minger said. "We have passed the ball a lot better as the season has gone on, and we shoot the ball a lot better as well."
Lahita extended Brooke's advantage to 3-0 when she scored with 17:38 left to play before halftime, and then Adler capped the scoring when she scored for a second time with 14:58 still showing on the scoreboard clock.
"We plays team that may be less talented than us, and we play teams that may be more talented than us," Welsh said. "I am proud of girls for wanting to step up and take on the challenge of playing tough teams.
"That is the only way you are going to get better. Playing good teams will help us understand where our skill level is at. It will shows where we need to be.
"We like playing tough opponents. Brooke is definitely a tough opponent. They always are."
The Bruins subbed players in and out the whole match.
"We were able to get everyone some playing time," Minger said. "We didn't plan, but that's just how it worked out."
Brooke honored its five seniors -- Bailey Serevicz, Kaydan Johnson, Helena Olmedo Minya, Buterbaugh and Villa – before the match.
"Our team is very close thus year," Minger said. "That is why they are all still here hugging each other. We wanted to have Madonna for Senior Night, because they know a lot of the girls on both teams."
Both teams are scheduled to open up postseason play Monday.
Madonna -- the No. 4 seed – is slated to take on No. 5 seed Magnolia in a West Virginia Class AA/A Region 1 Section 1 Quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. at the J.C. Williams Soccer Complex.
Brooke -- the No. 3 seed – is set to take on No. 2 seed Wheeling Park in a Class AAA Region 1 Section 1 Semifinal at 5:30 p.m. on the road.
"We are going to try really hard to win that sectional game," Minger said. "Wheeling Park is tough to beat."
