Alatis’ monster night leads Madonna to first win

By Staff reports 4 min read

WEIRTON -- Vanessa Alatis made her senior night one to remember.

The Blue Dons senior netted 39 points, one shy of a school record that was set in the 1980s, to lead Madonna to its first win of the season, 51-37, over visiting Paden City inside the Bill Barrett Gymnasium Thursday night.

She hit 11 buckets, one for 3, and went 16 of 19 at the foul line. She was 7 of 9 in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

"We're very happy for the girls, they have fought through a lot of adversity this season and just to see smiles on their faces made the coaches and their supporters so happy," Madonna coach Cory Wingett said. "Vanessa Alatis and Anna Backel both lead us to victory. They fought hard in the fourth quarter to help us secure the win.”

Julia Wingett scored the Blue Dons first nine points before Alatis took the game over, while Anna Backel, another of the Blue Dons seniors, drained a triple.

Though they did not appear on the score sheet, coach Wingett also credited the trio of Lilly Harbin, Marissa Sole and Mia Pietranton for their defensive effort in helping Madonna, now 1-13, get into the win column.

Madonna opened a 16-9 lead after one and expanded the lead to 28-13 at halftime.

The Blue Dons are scheduled to welcome Tyler Consolidated to Weirton on Saturday.
