Crusaders top Madonna for seventh-straight win

WEIRTON — Catholic Central ran its winning streak to seven Saturday by taking down host Madonna 62-26.

Ten players cracked the scoring column for the Crusaders, who now stand at 11-3 and remain in the hunt for a spot in the OVAC Class 2A playoffs.

Theresa Kerker took game-scoring honors with 17. The junior guard connected five times from behind the arc. Senior Katie Zatta knocked down three triples and finished with 11 points. Junior Ellen Rohde contributed 9 and senior Clara Symington 8.

The Crusaders jumped out to a 20-6 lead after the opening period and never looked back. They led 33-9 at the intermission.

Seniors Anna Backel and Vanessa Alatis evenly divided 20 points to lead the Blue Dons. Junior Julia Wingett drained a pair of 3-pointers to account for the other Madonna markers. Backel also had two triples while Alatis swished one.

Both teams are scheduled to play today, weather permitting. Central will host Wheeling Central with the junior varsity tip set for 6 p.m. Madonna is slated to entertain Paden City.
