Red Riders shut down Bruins, 1-0

WEIRTON -- Tyler Kelly's four-hit shutout lifted the Weir High baseball team to a 1-0 victory over Brooke on Saturday.

Kelly also walked three and struck out three in the complete-game effort. Offensively, Trenton Taflan singled and doubled. Anthony DiMatteis doubled and drove home the game's lone run.

For the Bruins, Andrew Coursin went the distance but took the loss. He allowed one earned run on six hits, four walks and struck out six. All four of their hits were singles. Braelynn Sperringer reached three times with a base knock and two free passes.

Weir sweeps the Fairmonts

FAIRMONT -- The Weir High softball squad won twice Saturday in Fairmont.

First, Madison Angus' two-hit shutout lifted the Red Riders (19-7) to a 5-0 victory. Angus also walked none and punched out eight. Reagan Hoover delivered two singles and two RBIs. Angus also singled twice and drove one home. Sophia Aperfine singled and doubled. Olivia Baker produced a single and one RBI, while Mallory Rosnick drove a run home.

In the second contest, Weir High was all over Fairmont Senior, 19-4. Chesney Tice picked up the win in 4 1/3 innings. She allowed two earned runs on five hits, no walks and struck out seven. Angus tossed the final 2 2/3 frames and gave up no runs on no hits, no walks and struck out four.

Offensively, Tice led with two singles, a double and three RBIs. Rosnick had a single, two doubles and brought a run home. Alexis Adams and Angus each contributed two singles and an RBI. Aperfine added a base knock and two RBIs.

Weir High tentatively hosts Madonna today for the city championship.

Brooke splits DH

NEW MARTINSVILLE -- The Brooke softball team split a doubleheader with Magnolia on Saturday and now stands at 15-5.

In Game 1, Magnolia tallied four unearned runs in the second inning for a 4-3 victory. Maleaha Misch took the loss, striking out eight, walking one and allowing four hits. Angelina Lippoli tallied a single and two RBIs. Emilee Knorr singled and doubled. Lexi Foresha had a double and an RBI.

The Bruins bounced back with a 9-4 victory in Game 2.

Lexi Foresha started the first two innings, walked one and struck out three. Baylei Jones earned the win in relief, walking one and striking out a pair.

At the plate, Lippoli had a double and an RBI. Knorr produced two base hits, as did Jone. Misch and Hailey Moore each added a single and an RBI, while Jenna Blain tripled.

Brooke tentatively travels to Oak Glen today.
