Tourney honors Cynthia Phillipson

STEUBENVILLE — The fourth-annual Cynthia Rose Phillipson Memorial Golf Outing is scheduled for July 14 at the Cadiz Country Club.

The event, a four-person scramble, will begin with a shotgun start at 11 a.m. The cost is $75 per golfer.

Phillipson, then a freshman at Catholic Central High School, passed away on Nov. 2, 2014, after suffering cardiac arrest at basketball practice. She, according to her father, Todd, loved dance, basketball and bringing joy to others.

Her spirit has influenced many people and the Phillipson family who remember her though the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation. Since its founding, the foundation has provided more than $16,000 in scholarship money. In addition, it has supported Mary’s Meals, Cornerstone of Hope and provided other funds for educational purposes.

These funds, according to Todd Phillipson, are a means to keep her Twitter account goal alive which stated “We all die. The goal isn’t to live forever, the goal is to create something that will.”

The golf outing is one of several events put on by the foundation to keep Cynthia’s Kitchen at St. Dominic’s School in Liberia going through the work of Catholic Central High School and Bishop John Mussio School. The kitchen feeds hundreds of students each day. It was named in Cynthia’s memory and provides these meals to the children through funds raised each year.

Cornerstone of Hope, based in Independence, provides assistance to grieving families, such as counseling and other services.

“Cynthia was a source of great joy who enjoyed sports, dance and just being with people,” Todd Phillipson said. “She is greatly missed and the foundation is an instrument to carry on that spirit through the golf event. It is meant to be a fun filled day.

“We have auction items and activities in the clubhouse that day for people to enjoy. Even if you are not golfing you are welcome to come out and check out our auction. We have some great prizes lined up for the golfers.”

Sponsors for the event as well as golfers are still being sought. In addition, donations are being accepted. Donations can be made to the Cynthia Rose Phillipson Charitable Foundation, 190 Anthony Drive Wintersville.
