Red Riders ready for trip to East Fairmont

FAIRMONT — A couple of teams in need of a win will meet Friday night in Fairmont when Weir High travels down interstate 79 to battle East Fairmont.

The Red Riders are looking for their first win, while the Bees are 1-5 on the season.

“We’re both in the same boat,” Weir head coach Quincy Wilson said. “They play in a pretty tough conference down there, they face Bridgeport and such. Like us, they play a bunch of 4A schools, so they’re taking their lumps. But the film looks good. They have some kids that can move the ball around. They’ve tried a bunch of different things. They’ve been spread, they’ve been no-huddle. They’ve kind of tried to figure out their secret sauce. So this week, we’re going to try to prepare for everything and just adjust to what they try to give us.”

East Fairmont’s lone win came at Grafton in Week 2. Since then, they’ve dropped four-straight.

The trip will be just Weir’s second of the season and by far its farthest until a season finale trip to Herbert Hoover.

“I am extremely excited,” Wilson said of having a lengthy trip. “I think we traveled well against Harrison Central. It was a hot day, and I think cramps got us. It’s a two-hour trip. We’ve been preparing these guys a couple days ahead of what’s in store.

“It’s a little different from home games where you’re kind of sitting around and you’re kind of trying to occupy their time and make sure they stay focused and that kind of that stuff. So I think we’ll do better with that. We’re better when it’s less thinking, just football.”

As for what stands out about the Bees, Wilson did not take long to answer.

“Size,” he said. “They’re big up front. Obviously, Central West Virginia has been hotbed for football for years and years. There are a bunch of great teams down there. Obviously, Fairmont Senior and North Marion, and they’re kind of squeezed in the middle of all those guys. And I think they’ve got some athletes as well.

They pose a great challenge. Obviously, you look at the record and see five losses, but they’re kind of like us in that we’ve both played a bunch of good teams.

“It’s going to be an interesting game. It will come down to who limits the mistakes, has less turnovers, and takes care of the football.”
