Red Knights look to carry momentum to Lowellville
LOWELLVILLE — The Toronto football team got off to a good start this season, and the Red Knights are looking to carry that momentum over into this week’s game.
After shutting out Southern Local, 34-0, at home, the boys from the Gem City hit the road for the first time this season as Toronto travels to take on Lowellville at 7 p.m. Friday night up at Paul Menichini Field.
Following his team’s win against the Indians last Friday night, Aubiel said he was happy with his team’s overall performance. He reiterated that belief Monday.
“Yeah, it is the same,” Toronto (1-0) head coach Jaret Aubiel said. “Overall, I was happy with our performance in Week 1, and now we are on to Week 2.”
Lowellville opened the season with a 40-28 victory at Columbiana.
“They have a lot of weapons on offense,” Aubiel said. “They have a good passing game, and their offensive line is well coached. They are good up front. They have a good offense. We are looking forward to the challenge.”
Offensively, the Rockets are led by junior quarterback Ricky Willrich. Senior receiver Josh Pazel is a big-play threat.
This season, Lowellville has switched to a four-man defensive front.
“That is what we are seeing so far,” Aubiel said. “That could change Friday night. You never know.”
The Rockets have good size up front as Lowellville has three seniors along its offensive line. The offensive linemen also play on the defensive line.
“They have got a lot of size,” Aubiel said. “They are definitely going to be a challenge. We are going to prepare all week.”
Toronto did not commit a turnover in last week’s win against Southern Local, and the Red Knights are going to have to take care of the ball again this week to pull out a victory.
“We have to play a clean football game,” Aubiel said. “We can’t have any turnovers. We are going to try and do our best up front against their big line.”
The Red Knights defeated the Rockets, 57-26 last season at home in a game marred by inclement weather.
“Last year was a little rough,” Aubiel said. “There was some heat lightning, and the game was delayed for what seemed like hours. I was glad we were able to play that game last year, and we were hoping for better weather Friday night.”
