Knights head on the road to Caldwell

CALDWELL — The Toronto football team to put on quite a show offensively last week against Conotton Valley as the Red Knights scored a touchdown on all 10 of their offensive possessions.

This week, the boys from the Gem City are taking their show onto the road as Toronto is set to take on Caldwell at 7 p.m. Friday night on the road at Howard J. Devol Field.

The Red Knights enter this week’s matchup against the Redskins coming off a 68-27 victory against the Rocket this past Friday night at home at Clarke Hinkle Field.

“On the field, we play complimentary football,” first-year Toronto (6-2) head coach Jaret Aubiel said. “Sometimes you are going to have an off night defensively, or you are going to have an off night offensively. Offensively, we did a good job with our run game and our pass game. Defensively, we got stops when we needed to. We played well on special teams.”

On the other side of the field, the boys from Noble County enter play this week with a record of 4-4. Caldwell improved to .500 on the season last week thanks to defeating Shadyside, 63-7, at home.

The Redskins had lost three of four games heading into the game against the Tigers, however, Caldwell’s one win came against Fort Frye by a score of 34-27 on the road. The Cadets are 6-2 on the season.

“Caldwell is a good football team,” Aubiel said. “They have shown that the last two weeks. They were who we expected them to be. They play a tough schedule.

“It is going to be a long bus ride, and they play on a grass field. Those are different things for us. It is going to be a present a challenge for us especially against a tough opponent like Caldwell.”

One of Cladwell’s four losses came against Edison back in Week on the road. The Wildcats won that game, 34-15. Caldwell followed that loss by defeating Fort Frye before being shut out against undefeated Barnesville, 44-0, on the road.

“They are very balanced,” Aubiel said. “They are 56-44 run. Their quarterback is good. They have good skill people. They are decent up front. It is going to be a challenge.” about

After only allowing 11 points per game through the first three weeks of the season, the Redskins allowed 147 points in the next four weeks.

“Defensively, they will line up in a 4-2 and sometimes a 4-4,” Aubiel said. “It just depends on what coverage they want. Their secondary does a good job in coverage. They are going to be a real challenge.”

Last week, the Rockets ran a hurry up style of offense as the boys from Harrison Central quickly got the line of scrimmage.

“That is something we are going to have to work on at practice,” Aubiel said. “Caldwell doesn’t hurry up like that, but we have to be ready for anything.”

The Red Knights play on a turf field at home, so they will have to adjust to playing on a grass field this week.

“Tuesday and Wednesday we might practice on the other field,” Aubiel said. “We just don’t want anyone to sprain an ankle or anything like that. We are going to try and prepare the best we can.”

Toronto enters play this week ranked sixth in the Ohio Division VI, Region 21 rankings, while Caldwell is ranked 12th in the Division VI, Region 23 rankings.

“It is not hard,” Aubiel said asked if it is tough keeping his team focused on this week and not looking down the road to the playoffs. “We know Caldwell is a good team. They won Region 27 last season. They are a good football team. Our focus is on them and only on them.”

The Red Knights defeated the Redskins, 54-20, last season at home.
