Bruins face a tall task with trip to Frankfort

RIDGELEY — Brooke became the latest victim to fall at the hands of the streaking Bridgeport Indians.

The Bruins traveled to Harrison County and returned home courtesy of a 55-0 shutout. While Brooke’s offensive effectiveness featured a slow roll to start the season, last Friday’s struggles are more representative of the dominance of Bridgeport as opposed to where Brooke is as a program.

Bridgeport ran for 400 yards, averaging 8.9 yards per carry in the 55-0 shutout that saw the Indians compile 48 points by halftime.

Quarterback Jack Spatafore rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns while feature back Josh Love added 82 yards on eight carries, pedestrian numbers by his standards.

Bridgeport passed only three times, completing two.

Brooke was limited to 62 yards of total offense and just 14 on the ground.

The Indians’ defense is stalwart, but Brooke will need to shake off that performance if it hopes to bounce back against this week’s opponent.

The Bruins trek across the Mountain State continues Friday with their third-straight lengthy road trip. This time, Brooke heads to Ridgely, some 131 miles and nearly 2.5 hours away from Wellsburg.

There waiting will be the undefeated Frankfort Falcons (5-0), one of the top-rated teams in Class AA.

Frankfort is coached by Kevin Whiteman, the winningest coach in school history.

Under Whiteman’s 14 and a half seasons of tutelage, the falcons are 119-48, making six straight trips to the West Virginia postseason.

Brooke isn’t the first OVAC school to make the trip to Frankfort this season. Weir traveled to Ridgely on September 20 and received a 51-0 defeat for its efforts.

If Brooke is wanting a better result, its defense will need to contend with yet another ground-based attack bolstered by a mammoth and physical offensive line.

Frankfort lost its two primary ball carriers from last season’s 7-4 playoff team that exited at the hands of Weir in the first round.

Despite those losses, the team’s Wing-T based attack hasn’t missed a beat, thanks to the emergence of junior Carder Shanholz and Keyser transfer Jullian Pattison (6-2, 200) at fullback.

Shanholz ran for 204 yards last week in a 42-19 win at Mountain Ridge that snapped the Miners’ 28-game home winning streak.

Frankfort will pass a bit more than Bridgeport and the Falcons are successful when they go to the air behind senior quarterback Uriah Cutter.

Cutter, a first-year starter, threw for 170 yards on 8-of-10 passing vs. Mountain Ridge.

Last season’s starter, Blake Jacobs, made the move to the backfield prior to the start of the season and Cutter has flourished in taking over his role.

Frankfort ran for 377 total against the Miners, averaging 5.7 yards per play and going a near-perfect 6-for-7 on third down.

As previously mentioned, it’s the team’s starting offensive line-all seniors and led by 6-2, 280-pound center Brayden Shipway, that fuels the offense.

Brooke, still dealing with the injury to starting back Dante Tulenko.

In his absence, sophomore QB Ty Sperringer and Triston Stevens have picked up the slack, with 185 and 139 yards, respectively.

Sperringer has passed for 385 yards with five touchdowns, completing 38 of his 102 passes.

After the road series ends, the Bruins return home to Brooke Memorial to face rival John Marshall.
