A challenge from the North

Big Red takes on Canadian power Huron Heights

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red football team faces a different kind of challenge this week when Huron Heights makes the trek to Harding Stadium from north of the border.

The Warriors, an undefeated team out of Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, will bring a Wing-T style offense to Steubenville when the unbeaten teams clash Friday night.

“I know their coach pretty well … they’re a 7-0 team and they beat a good team last week,” Big Red head coach Reno Saccoccia said. “We haven’t gone against a Wing-T in a long time, we’re going to have to work to be ready for that. It should be a good game.”

Preparing for that style of offense is going to be an adjustment, the veteran grid boss knows.

“It’s different to go from facing a spread with one or no tight ends and one back or two backs, to a full house in a phone booth,” Saccoccia said. “It’s going from playing on a runway to in a phone booth.”

The Warriors are making their second trip to the United States after traveling to New York to take on Bishop Timon last week and earning a 27-7 win. They play a 12-game schedule, in which Big Red is the second of six-straight against American teams. They travel to River Rouge, Michigan, next week and take on three more New York teams to finish, including Long Island Luthern, which is Big Red’s Week 10 opponent.

The Warriors, coached by Heath Weir, who started his career as a graduate assistant in the college ranks at Memphis and Arkansas State, have wins over Canadian teams Brantford Collegiate Institute (45-7), Michael Power St. Joseph (57-0), St. Peter (54-0), Chaminade College School (35-0), Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School (55-7) and Paul Dwyer (58-7).

They won the Ontario provincial championships in both the senior and junior divisions last season, winning the Golden Horseshoe Bowl.

Weir has been a part of the program since 2004 and is also the publisher and editor of a football magazine.

“It’s good to have a test at this time of the year, the more you get tested I think the better you will be,” Saccoccia said. “It’s helps develop you as a team. It helps you prepare through the week and the better preparation you have through the week, the better you perform on Friday night.”

That preparation, Saccoccia thinks, is what has fueled the success the last few weeks as Big Red has outscored opponents 176-46 in its last four games.

“I think that we’ve had three or four weeks of good practices and that’s really important,” Saccoccia said. “It keeps everyone on their toes. The way we practice, we practice with two groups and it keep guys competing. They’re competing for each other.”

Big Red’s win over Linsly last week helped it move to the No. 1 spot in the Division III, Region 11 playoff computer rankings.

Steubenville is the No. 2 ranked team in the latest Division III Ohio Associated Press poll for a second-straight week, receiving two first-place votes.

In that victory over Linsly, quarterback Aiden Davis threw for four touchdown passes, giving him 11 on the season against just one interception. He’s also rushed for seven more touchdowns and now has 1,209 passing yards on the season.

Brody Saccoccia, who was already the leading receiver on the team, hauled in a pair of long touchdowns and went over 100 yards on three catches Friday, giving him 15 grabs for 301 yards on the season.

The opening kick on Friday night is slightly earlier than normal, set for 6:30 p.m.
