Weir looks to right ship at Frankfort

SHORT GAP -- To say the last two weeks have not quite gone as planned for Weir High would be an understatement.
The Red Riders are coming off of lopsided defeats at home to Toronto and on the road at Indian Creek to dip to 1-2 on the young (also an adjective that fits the Red Riders) season.
Things don't get any easier for Frank Sisinni and company as the Red Riders make a long trek to the Eastern Panhandle to take on unbeaten Frankfort.
The focus for the trip is getting things back on track for the youthful group.
"We ran into two teams with a lot of experience the last two games," Sisinni said. "We're in the mode now of trying to get things corrected on our end. That process started the day after the game. We went in and got back on the drawing board talking about things we need to do as a team and what the staff needs to do to correct things and get things headed back in the right direction.
"You can't put a price tag on experience. We are a team that doesn't have a lot of experience going against teams that had a lot of experience. Last year we were the experienced team and now we're on the other side of it where we are younger and trying to get things headed in the right direction."
That won't be an easy task against a tradition-rich program like Frankfort. The Falcons sit 2-0 with wins over Moorefield and Hampshire and are ranked No. 2 in the Class AA standings.
They have been to the postseason six consecutive seasons. They will also be looking for some revenge, as the Red Riders won a pair of meetings a year ago, a regular season showdown between top-five ranked teams at the time and then again in the first round of the playoffs.
"When we play Frankfort football, we know it's going to be a challenge and they're going to be a well-coached team," Sisinni said. "If you look at (coach) Kevin Whiteman and his staff and how they do things with their Wing-T system, you can tell they're a well-coached football team.
"It's going to be good for us to go hit the road and see how we travel. It's the first time we have gone there since 2020. Last year they came to us twice, once in the regular season and once in the playoffs. It's good to get out and good to be back in West Virginia play."
As for what to expect from the Falcons, Sisinni thinks it will be a lot more of the same that has fueled their success in the past.
"They don't change, they've had a lot of success through the years with the philosophy they use in the Eastern Panhandle and we know they have an experienced staff," Sisinni said. "They're a team that's playing well, they've beaten two good teams and had a bye week already.
"We're going to see a lot of things we saw in the Oak Glen game in terms of the Wing-T."
Despite the two losses, the Red Riders are still in the early playoff picture as WVTailgateCentral lists Weir High as ranked 18th in Class AAA.
A big victory over the Falcons could not only right the ship but boost Weir back into the top-16.
The opening kick Friday night in Short Gap is set for 7 p.m.
