BLACKSVILLE -- John McCune's debut as Madonna's grid boss was a memorable one, both because his Blue Dons rallied for a victory and it was a late night due to a pair of lightning delays.
McCune and the Blue Dons will be hoping lighting strikes twice, figuratively anyway, as they travel to Clay-Battelle looking for a 2-0 start.
Madonna trailed 22-6 late in the second quarter against Wellsville before out-scoring the Tigers 12-0 in the fourth quarter for a cherished 30-28 victory.
The Cee-Bees also won their opener, rolling 44-6 past Hundred at home.
In Madonna's big win, Wes Molish had 70 rushing yards and the game-winning score, while freshman QB Maddox Bowen threw a pair of long touchdowns, three overall, and racked up a 152-yard performance.
Andre Crossland made both of his catches scores, a 75 yarder and a 9 yarder, while KJ Ward had a 70-yard catch-and-run score and returned a kick 95 yards to score another TD.
Maverick Gum rushed for 91 yards and three touchdowns in Clay-Battelle's season-opening victory, Cee-Bee's QB Braden Ponceroff adding two scores, a run and a long punt return TD, in the victory.
The Cee-Bees were 3-6 a year ago.
Friday's meeting is the first between the teams since a 36-6 Madonna win in Novemeber of 2018. Madonna also won meetings in 2017 and 2016, while Clay-Battelle won the previous two meetings before that.
Since 2004, the Blue Dons hold a 10-5 edge in 15 meetings between the schools.
The opening kick in Blacksville, just across the Pennsylvania border and about an hour and a half trip for the Blue Dons, is set for 7 p.m.
