NEW MANCHESTER — Coming off of a bye week and its first win of the season the last time it was on the field, Oak Glen takes on winless Warren Local Friday at home.
The last time out, the Golden Bears (1-2) came from behind to defeat Buckeye Local 28-21 in double overtime, something head coach Ted Arneault Jr. hopes his team can build on.
“We are hoping to carry the momentum from that game into this next week,” he said. “We’re going to just rely on the momentum. We’re really focused on working hard and having a great week of practice to get ready.”
Oak Glen is still growing as a team, according to Arneault, and has improved every week leading up to getting in the win column.
“We still have room for growth,” he said. “We are a young team that is going to continuously improve and get better as we become more comfortable and our younger kids get Friday night experience. I’m very optimistic about the rest of the season. I do feel like we’re getting better every week, and I feel like the kids that didn’t have any Friday night experience have gotten better after getting some Friday night experience, and it’s been a huge help. I’ve seen both in games and in practice that our confidence level continues to build every week.”
The bye week also came at a good time for Oak Glen, allowing some of the team’s dinged-up players to recover.
“We had some kids that needed the extra week to get healthy,” Arneault said. “We had some bruised ribs and a couple kids that had pinched nerves, so some things that needed times to heal up.”
One of the Golden Bears that will not be back is senior offensive and defensive lineman Tony Minnis, who is out for the rest of the season after suffering a broken fibula against Buckeye Local.
“We have a junior that is going to step up for him on offense in Logan Meadows,” Arneault said. “He’s been seeing time on defense, and we’ve got a variety of kids that are going to help our defensive line rotation, which includes Cole English, one of our juniors who is going to step up and try to fill some of Tony’s shoes. Obviously losing one of your senior leaders and captains for the season is tough.”
As for the opponent, Warren Local comes in at 0-4, but Arneault is not ready to dismiss it just based on its record alone.
“They’ve played three tough opponents, obviously not teams close to the valley,” he said. “They are more from Marrietta and that area of Ohio. They’ve played some quality teams, probably the most notable being Fort Frye last week. They have lost their games, but they certainly have talent from what I’ve seen on film. They’re going to be a tough opponent for us.
“They are a senior heavy team; they’ve got some nice skill. Their quarterback is a pretty athletic kid. I would say he is their primary threat both running and passing. I’m expecting them to run the ball at us quite a bit. I’d say they are probably an 80 percent run team.”
The Warriors are averaging just nine points per game, while giving up an average of 50.3 points. Offensively, Oak Glen is averaging 18.7 points per game, while surrendering 45.3 on average.
The Golden Bears are gaining an average of 237.3 yards on offense, doing most of the damage through the air where they average 185.7 yards a game and just 51.7 on the ground. Quarterback Nick Chaney is 31-of-71 passing with 524 yards, a touchdown and six interceptions.
Running the ball, Blake Almo is averaging 4.1 yards a carry, racking up 114 yards on 28 carries.
Ethan Travis leads the way receiving with nine catches for 196 yards, averaging 21.8 per catch. Michael Lemley has nine receptions for 100 yards, averaging 11.1 per catch. The lone touchdown pass was caught by Jeremy Taylor, who has five catches for 168 yards and is averaging 33.6 yards per reception.
On defense, Oak Glen is averaging 432 yards against per game, with 254.7 against on the ground and an average of 177.3 against through the air.
