This year marks the 60th year since the Community Action Network was established to help American families and communities overcome obstacles to poverty. Originally initiated through President Johnson's War on Poverty, Community Action has been at the forefront of tackling stubborn problems of poverty and inequality for decades. More than 1,000 agencies across the country are working every day to create opportunities and transform the lives of their neighbors.
At the Corporation for Ohio Appalachian Development, we are proud to provide administrative and advocacy support to a network for 17 Appalachian Ohio Community Action Agencies, spanning 30 counties.
This network of trusted community partners has been a steadfast and trusted presence in the region, offering critical aid to those experiencing financial hardship.
Yet, beyond their foundational role, our CAAs exemplify innovation and adaptability, constantly exploring novel approaches to help combat Appalachia's most difficult problems.
As we begin Community Action Month in May, it's an opportune moment to acknowledge the transformative impact our network agencies have had on countless families. Year after year, our CAAs provide immediate aid such as shelter, utility support and food assistance, alongside long-term supports like education, community development and employment opportunities. Crucially, these agencies are rooted in local governance, ensuring representation from the private, public and low-income sectors of the community.
The urgency for supporting your local community action agency has never been greater. In the face of persistently high poverty rates, inequities in health care access and outcomes, and acute shortages in employment, housing and childcare, the advocacy and assistance provided by our network are indispensable.
These problems necessitate tailored and grassroot solutions.
With unwavering determination, our network remains committed to championing the people of Appalachian Ohio, a dedication that has endured for nearly six decades.
