Letter to a girl who I have not had the chance to meet

By JULIE STENGER 4 min read

This is an open letter.

It is written for a girl I have yet to meet. A girl who I will refer to as "the one."

For you are the one my son will have selected as his companion through this life.

I do not know you. You do not know me.

You have not even met him … yet.

But when that day comes, there is something I want you to know. Something I need for you to know.

First, let me say there is obviously something extraordinary about you. It is why you were chosen to be "the one."

I would like to be in a position where I could offer you something as a way of welcoming you into our family and into our lives.

But all I can do is merely offer you words. Just words which I hope you will keep with you forever.

To the girl I have yet to meet,

When you find one another, I want you to know you are going to be good enough.

You are going to be perfect enough.

You are going to be enough.

I am confident because you will be the girl who holds his heart.

And that is why you will always hold a special place in mine.

Please know I do not make light of these sentiments.

Here is why …

If and when the day comes you have a child of your own, it is then, and only then, that you will completely understand what it is like to genuinely love someone.

It is unlike anything I could ever describe.

Had I a million years to try and explain the love a mother has for her child, I could not.

For there isn't a word yet created which conveys such a feeling.

And it isn't the kind of love that gives you butterflies -- the way a new relationship does.

It's not the type of love that makes you cry yourself to sleep -- like when a romance ends abruptly and you are left only with solitude to keep you company.

Nor is it a love that is based on respect, admiration or gratitude -- like that which we have toward our parents, grandparents or friends.

The love we possess for a child …

It surpasses all else.

It is a feeling that encompasses your entire being.

It is adoring somebody beyond measure.

It is the willingness to give up your life without thought or hesitation in order that they might live.

It is when your own happiness means absolutely nothing, for all that truly matters is if they are content.

I asked God after the birth of each of my sons to please take care of each of them and keep him safe.

To please send his angels to surround him and protect him from harm.

I cried to God begging should he grant me this one request, then any prayer or need I might ever come to Him with would be secondary. I said I would understand if his answer was, "No," because the protection of each child of mine was more than enough.

I would gladly carry all my son's tragedies for him. Over and over again. As long as he is able to carry the triumphs.

And yes, when a mother comments she would die for her child, it is absolutely true.

Do not even question that statement.

This is the love I have for him.

This is how much a mother loves her child.

To the girl I have yet to meet,

Should the day ever come and you are fortunate enough to be blessed with a child of your own, you will love him continuously through it all.

Despite all of his faults.

Despite all of his failures.

Despite it all.

There is nothing you wouldn't do to protect him from all that is negative in the world.

There isn't anything you wouldn't do to ensure his happiness and take away all of his pain.

If only you could.

Because once you have looked into the eyes of your child, life changes. From that moment on, you no longer exist for yourself.

He is the reason you breathe and this world would be absolutely meaningless without him in it.

You will question how you ever made it through life without him around.

And you will never want to see a day he is no longer in it.

To the girl I have yet to meet,

For my son to one day fall in love with you and care for you enough that he wants to share his life with you … well, that speaks volumes as to the person you are. And I want you to know, it is more than enough.

Starting at /week.
