Law and order

To the editor: “The streets of our country are in turmoil. The universities are filled with students rebelling and rioting. Communists are working to destroy our country. Russia is threatening us with her might, and the republic is in danger. Yes, danger from within and without. We need law and order. Yes, without law and order, our nation cannot survive. Elect us and we shall restore law and order.” Those words are from a campaign speech Adolph Hitler delivered in Hamburg, Germany, in 1932. He lost that election. Sound familiar? Hitler was never elected to any office. ...

Deceptive commercials

To the editor: Many organizations solicit funds using commercials. Some organizations run their commercials year-round while others appear during the holidays. There are organizations that have services for children with illnesses or disabilities. There are organizations for veterans and their families. There are organizations that rescue and care for abused animals. The commercials for these organizations include testimonials from the actual people who receive the services or the employees. Parents speak about the treatments that their children are receiving for cancer. Children ...

Let’s make a decision

To the editor: In October 2022, former Diocese of Steubenville Bishop Jeffrey Monforton informed his diocesan staff and clergy that a potential merger with the Diocese of Columbus was necessary and would be presented at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for their vote that November. The vote never took place and was removed from the meeting agenda due to push back from the clergy and laity. Last Feb. 7, more than two years later, Apostolic Administrator Bishop Edward Lohse issued the Report of the State of the Diocese of Steubenville in The Steubenville Register. ...

Legion Auxiliary event was special

To the editor: On Dec.11, members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit No. 33 held their annual Christmas party for our American veterans residing in our nine local nursing homes. They were served a luncheon, and they were entertained by line dancers, a group of ukulele players and the children from the Wells Academy. They sang Christmas carols, and even did a song in sign language. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus gave the children a candy cane filled with candy on their way back to school. Steubenville Police Chief Ken Anderson and many of his officers; also Chief Robert Ribar of the ...

A cabal of dunces

To the editor: I owe MAGA an apology — though “MAGA” is really shorthand for something broader. I’m talking about the conspiracy theories that many, maybe most, MAGA voters have repeated for decades, long before there was QAnon and even before Alex Jones became a household name. Ideas once dismissed as fringe — muttered by tin-foil-hatted callers on late-night Art Bell radio shows — now appear less absurd than before. We’re discovering, it seems, that shape-shifting lizard people do, actually, control the levers of power. Or at least something close enough to them ...

Sharing true spirit of Christmas

To the editor: I am writing to share a wonderful story of generosity and kindness that truly made this Christmas the best one ever for the residents of Shaffer Plaza in Steubenville. Shaffer Plaza is an IDD ICF group home that supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and this past Christmas was made incredibly special thanks to an extraordinary donation from the living family members of the late Pete Puskarich. They came together to honor Pete’s memory in the most meaningful way — by giving joy, comfort and unforgettable memories to others. Because ...
