To the editor:
I'm writing to thank Julie Stenger of the Herald-Star for her column ("If you can't help them, at least don't hurt them,") and also Carol Teaff for her letter to the editor in the Feb. 8 edition ("Animal cruelty on display.")
Both told readers about the recent animal cruelty incident. This was hard to take in, but we might begin by realizing that plenty of people share this terrible news and mourn this unnecessary suffering. It is not a sign of weakness to care about and act for homeless domestic animals.
The person who did this must be very troubled. The rest of us can act on behalf of these would-be pets by adopting from our local animal shelters or by donating time or money to these shelters and to the Jefferson County Humane Society. To those who do, I thank you and I shake your hand.
